TEXTBOOK LOAN SCHEME

In an effort to reduce the cost of studying in London, several years ago the London Undergraduate Program introduced the Textbook Loan Scheme.

Through the Scheme, students are able to borrow textbooks for some or all of their courses for a small administrative fee.

Currently that fee is £5 per student, and in the Fall Semester 2006 each student borrowed materials worth between £18 and £146.  We feel this offers excellent value.

Use of the Scheme is conditional upon an agreement to return all textbooks in the condition in which they were checked out. There is no obligation upon students to use the Scheme, and students who wish to purchase all their textbooks will be offered the chance to do so.

The Textbook Loan Scheme is administered by the LUP Librarian, Alice Tyrell, and uses the same computer system as the Library. This allows students to monitor their loan records, and to take responsibility for their use of the scheme.

In an ideal world, we would be able to offer all textbooks in the Loan Scheme. However, courses change, new editions are released, new material becomes available, new texts are chosen for study, loaned copies are lost, or become damaged through wear and tear, and books go out of print. Therefore, it is not possible for the Textbook Loan Scheme to offer all the books that might be needed to all students. Instead, the Scheme focuses on the required course, Images of Britain through the Arts, and other core courses, which are offered regularly.

To give students an idea of what material may be available to them through the Textbook Loan Scheme, the course listings have been annotated with the following information.

The textbook(s) for this course will be available through the Textbook Loan Scheme
- This is a commitment that the Scheme will provide enough copies of the textbook or books for this course for every student taking the class.

Textbook(s) for this course may be available through the Textbook Loan Scheme
- This means that we expect the Scheme to provide copies of the textbook or books to most or all students, but are unable to guarantee this.

Textbook(s) for this course may be available through the Textbook Loan Scheme, but some titles will not.
- This means that while some of the textbooks assigned for the course will be available through the Scheme, other books will not, and students will need to purchase their own copies of some textbooks for this course.

Textbook(s) for this course are not available through the Textbook Loan Scheme
- This means that students will be expected to buy their own copies of the textbook or books for this course. There will be opportunities to buy discounted textbooks on arrival in London, and unless specific
instructions are given to students planning to take a particular course, we recommend that students wait until they are in the UK to purchase books.

No textbook has been assigned to this course
  - This means that no textbook has been assigned for the course. It may mean that there is no textbook, or that textbooks will be assigned later.
