CULTURAL IMMERSION PHOTO ESSAY CONTEST

The London Program is pleased to announce two photo essay competitions, which are designed to reinforce the principal ideal of the London Program—cultural immersion in international contexts.

Past winners can be seen at the end of this page.

Photo Essay 1  - London/UK

Students should submit an essay of 750-1,000 words explaining how some aspect of the cultural life of London or any site in the UK has contributed to their educational experience in one or more classes currently taken in the London Program.

The focus of this essay could be a neighbourhood, a regional setting, a museum, a play, a concert, a monument, a church, a public building, a market, an institution, or any other aspect of cultural life that bears an important relation to students’ classes. The essay should be accompanied by 3-5 photos, selected and arranged to help illuminate the point of the essay.

Students are encouraged to be creative and innovative in their thinking, which means that the topic of the essay need not be part of a course syllabus.

Evaluation of photo essays will be made according to: 1) the significance of the cultural immersion in relation to educational experience; 2) the eloquence of the writing; 3) the relevance of the photos to the argument of the essay.

Two students may submit a single photo essay as a co-authored work.

Award:  £50.  In the event that the winning photo essay is co-authored, students will divide the £50 award equally.

Website Feature:  The winning photo essay will be featured on the London Program website.

Deadline:  Photo essays should be submitted by Friday, 6th November to Alice Tyrell at: Tyrell.5@nd.edu

The London Program reserves the right to publish all submissions on its website.
