RECREATIONAL FACILITIES
In addition to libraries, computer laboratories, and classrooms, the London Centre also offers a range of recreational facilities. Lounges are provided for each of the main groups who use the building. Undergraduates have their own Junior Common Room in the basement of the building with a television and VCR as well as vending machines. Graduates have their own Middle Common Room on the ground floor with its own television and VCR. The Senior Common Room, also on the ground floor, is usually reserved for use by staff and faculty, but is regularly opened up for receptions and other large gatherings.
The London Centre also has a small gymnasium and a squash court (with a basketball hoop) on the third floor. Squash rackets may be borrowed from the Reception Desk. Changing rooms and showers are located in the basement, as are lockers for the safe storage of personal possessions. The Junior Common Room also contains a full-size table tennis table. Students wishing to reserve the sports facilities should enquire at the Reception Desk to arrange a booking.
The London Centre's cafeteria, known as "Vince's Place", is also located in the basement of the building. Run by Vince Fitt, it provides excellent hot and cold sandwiches and beverages at competitive prices during lunchtimes from Monday to Thursday each week for most of the year.
There is a coin-operated public telephone in the basement (outgoing calls only). International calling cards can be purchased from many local shops.
The London Centre also has a small inner courtyard which is accessed through the basement. This area has been landscaped and provides a peaceful, sheltered outdoor space for users of the building. Visitors to the building are reminded that the courtyard is the only place where smoking is permitted in the London Centre. |
