MEDICAL PROVISION
In accordance with official University policy, health and accident insurance is mandatory for all students studying abroad. Coverage is provided by from HTH Worldwide. For further information regarding this coverage, please contact Notre Dame's director of risk management and safety at (574) 631 5037 or visit the HTH website.
In the UK, Notre Dame students are considered to be "private patients" for the purposes of routine medical care and, as such, must either visit a surgery that works closely with HTH Insurance, or pay in cash (usually £60-£90) at the time of their visit. In many cases, the doctor's fee can be reimbursed through students' own or their parents' medical insurance. Students should be sure to ask for receipts at the end of their appointments.
Initial treatment of genuine medical emergencies is provided free of charge in the Accident & Emergency departments (the A&E) of hospitals allied to Britain's National Health Service (the NHS). This service - including doctors' fees and emergency room fees (for example, x-rays, medication and supplies) - is free, irrespective of nationality and length of time spent in the UK. Subsequent treatment for the stabilization of medical conditions which require hospitalization, such as operations and the care of broken and fractured limbs, are provided to non-residents only for a fee.
Students with special medical needs should contact the London Program Office on campus as soon as possible before departure.
Students with medical conditions requiring on-going treatment should contact a surgery (doctor's office) in London directly. For information on surgeries close to the London Centre and to the student residences, please consult our Medical Care page.
During their stay, the Rectors provide students with directions for addressing any medical emergency which might arise.
