MEDICAL CARE
If you are ill, please contact the Rector on duty. The Rectors have up-to-date information concerning local physicians and can help arrange for you to see a doctor. If you are missing class due to illness, y ou should also contact the LUP Office, by phone (020 74847811) or by email (london@nd.edu).
Britain's National Health Service (NHS) provides one of the most sophisticated systems of health care in the world. In general, the treatment one receives in the UK is very similar to treatment one receives in the USA. However, there are some important differences.
NHS Patients versus Private Patients
All residents in the UK are provided with comprehensive health care through the NHS. Visitors, such as Notre Dame students, are not covered by the NHS. They are considered to be "private patients". Private patients must pay for the medical services they receive. Medical practices, doctors' offices, pharmacies, and clinics may serve only NHS patients, or only private patients, or both. Generally, most NHS practices will see private patients as well as NHS patients, but private patients should check first. NHS practices will usually try to "squeeze in" private patients during special times or at odd hours.
Emergency Medical Treatment
Everybody in the UK, whether they be a visitor or a resident, is legally guaranteed access to emergency medical treatment regardless of ability to pay. In practice, this means that Notre Dame students typically do not pay for emergency medical treatment given in the "Accident and Emergency" ward of a hospital. They may, however, be charged for treatment that is not considered an emergency.

DOCTORS, CONSULTANTS, PROFESSORS
As in the USA, so in the UK medical doctors have various titles reflecting their specialty, their training, and their experience.
GPs. In the UK primary healthcare physicians are referred to as "general practitioners". In common parlance general practitioners are called GPs. Most GPs work in group practices known as "surgeries". British patients often speak of "going to the GP's surgery" and GPs often refer to their "surgery hours". In cases where non-emergency medical care is required, most Notre Dame students will turn to a GP in the first instance.
Consultants. Doctors with a hospital attachment who have extra training and extra experience are called "consultants" in the UK. They are the equivalent of US "specialists". Consultants may work directly with patients through their private offices, but most often they deal with cases referred to them by GPs. Many consultants, especially consultant surgeons, are referred to as "Mister" or "Miss" rather than "Doctor". So students should not be confused if their doctor is described as "Miss Randolph" rather than "Dr Randolph".
Professors. Professors are physicians who are connected to a medical school, who teach medicine, and who spend a considerable amount of their time engaged in medical research. It is unlikely that a Notre Dame student would be treated by a professor of medicine.
