Living and studying in Jerusalem provides students with a unique opportunity to better understand the Bible, Middle Eastern history, and the religious, social, and political situation of the Palestinians and Israelis in the Holy Land through distinctive course offerings and daily experiences. Simply stated, there is no other location that offers the options and resources that are available to University of Notre Dame students in Jerusalem.
Through structured academic and experiential learning, the Jerusalem Summer Program seeks to participate in the University’s mission to cultivate in its students a “disciplined sensibility to the poverty, injustice, and oppression that burden the lives of so many. The aim is to create a sense of human solidarity and concern for the common good that will bear fruit as learning becomes service to justice.”
The Program supports the Office of International Studies’ belief that students develop awareness of the importance and benefit of a global perspective through international study and complementary activities. It will also serve to help students come to understand their potential as leaders in a global world through exposure to unique academics, research, and cultural engagement in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Religious
Life
Tantur is an institution founded as a result of the remarkable ecumenical
dialogues that took place during and after the Second Vatican Council.
At this international ecumenical institute for theological research, participants
learn to appreciate the connection between prayer and learning. The daily
evening prayer and the Sunday Worship Service are designed for the entire
household, which frequently includes Protestants, Anglicans and Catholics
from various parts of the world. Notre Dame students participate in evening
and Sunday prayer services.
In addition, daily Mass is available to all, as are services special to
the Anglican or other household groups, depending on the make-up of the
community at the time. Students go out to Sunday Eucharist liturgies.
Housing and Meals
Students live and take meals at Tantur. They reside in groups in apartments with private baths. Three meals are served daily in the
Tantur dining room, and they feature a variety of Middle Eastern and American
dishes.
Cultural and Recreational Opportunities
Museums,
art galleries, Palestinian and Israeli universities and research institutes,
as well as innumerable religious shrines and monasteries are easily accessible.
Movies, concerts and plays also abound in Jerusalem. Field trips are basic
to the program, which seeks as far as possible to use the land for its
classroom. There are day trips on the average of once a week and a weekend
trip to Galilee.
Health Care
Participants must be adequately covered by health insurance which is
valid in the Middle East during the period of their stay abroad. Students will have access to local doctors and hospitals.
Program Cost
The goal of the Office of International Studies is that the cost of the JSP will be within the range of other Notre Dame summer programs. The current estimate for the Jerusalem Summer Program 2010 fee is approximately $9,000 per student, which will cover the following costs: Group flight to Tel Aviv from either New York or Atlanta, Tuition for 6 Notre Dame credits, Housing, Most meals, Group excursions (generally 2 weekly), and a 4-day trip to the Galilee. In addition, students will be responsible for the following costs: Travel to New York or Atlanta, Cell phone, HTH health insurance, Meals not covered by Program, Independent travel in Jerusalem/Bethlehem, Medical evaluation, Immunizations, Visas (if necessary), Textbooks, Personal expenses, etc.
