Religious
Life
Religion is very
much a part of daily life in the Tirol. Casual conversation, holidays,
wall paintings, tiny wayside shrines, parish and village churches, and
the imposing cathedral are constant reminders of the deep living faith
of the local population. The University Jesuit Church has special student
masses and no student lives far from a local parish church.
Transportation
and Travel
The program furnishes round-trip air transportation from a selected gateway city to Austria. From Salzburg to Innsbruck the students travel by bus or train. Round trip transportation is also provided to and from program-sponsored field trips. Costs of other transportation and personal travel throughout the year are borne by the student.
Costs for baggage in excess of limits allowed for international flights
must be paid by the individual.
Housing and Meals
Students are housed with other European students (mostly Austrians) in Austrian student dormitories with which Notre Dame has established contracts. They are directly adjacent to campus center or within a short walk from central campus. Program participants are expected to adapt to local norms regarding visits and hours. The program arranges for common meals at local restaurants. Students receive a living allowance to use at their discretion to eat at the "Mensa" (university cafeteria), local restaurants, or to purchase food to cook in dorm kitchens.
Cultural and Recreational
Opportunities
The
city of Innsbruck has several fine theater concert halls which feature
numerous plays, operas, recitals, and symphony concerts during the winter
season. In addition, its museums and churches have considerable historical
and artistic interest. Both at the university and in the city, lectures
are open to the public. The city itself, with its parks and the beautiful
Inn River, is a constant source of discovery and enjoyment. But all man-made
and recreational resources seem secondary compared to the surrounding
nature and the mountains of the Tirol. Minutes from the heart of the city,
one can hike or picnic in beautiful mountain forests. Winter sports are
so important that Innsbruck has twice (1964, 1976) hosted the Winter Olympics. Innsbruck will host the European Soccer Championship in 2008.
Contacts with
Austrians
Notre Dame students are in a unique position to develop friendships with Austrian and other international students, as dorm life, classroom interaction and on-campus student groups cater to a broad range of interests from sports clubs to musical performance groups. Each academic year student in the Notre Dame program is assigned an Austrian host family, opening yet other avenues of interaction. Exposure to Austrian family life through the host family program often generates long-lasting friendships.
Health Care
Participants in the
program are covered by health insurance provided by the University of Notre Dame. Information about the heatlh insurance plan Notre Dame provides can be found on the insurance webpage of this site.
