Religious Life

NDA fosters a rich religious life in Fremantle. Mass is held in the University Chapel at 12.35pm Mon to Fri and at 6pm on Sunday evenings.  Students are encouraged to participate in the liturgical life of the local parish. The University's Student Life Office helps to coordinate volunteer opportunities and the Campus Ministry Office provides students with the opportunity to participate in retreats and other interest groups.

Transportation and Travel

The program schedules round-trip air transportation from the West Coast of the United States to Perth. The students are met at the Perth airport by NDA representatives, and travel by bus to their Fremantle residence hall. Public transportation in the Fremantle area is available by bus or train. Bicycles are also a popular form of transport and recreation. While in Australia, students may not have cars and are discouraged from hitchhiking.

Housing and Meals

Students live in a community setting in Port Lodge. This hotel-like facility is within walking distance of the University's main academic buildings. As on the Notre Dame campus, rectors and resident assistants will be available to the students. Two communal meals are served each week. For the rest of the meals, a food allowance will be provided for students to use at their discretion.

Cultural and Recreational Opportunities

Fremantle is known for its relaxed and easygoing lifestyle, which reflects the way of Australian life. It has a wealth of early Australian architecture and it draws some of its special character from people who arrived from all corners of the world. This city offers a wide variety of cultural and recreational opportunities. Many artists have made Fremantle their home, thus, art galleries with fine displays of Aboriginal art, Australian pottery and woodwork can be found among the commercial shops.

Sport and leisure are an integral part of the Australian culture. The beaches of Perth and Fremantle are popular and offer opportunities for sporting activities as swimming, surfing, sailing, fishing and sunbathing. During the month of November, Festival Fremantle is staged showcasing Fremantle's local talent along with national and international acts. Cappuccino Strip thrives with outdoor cafes and is a popular place during the warm weather as are the Fremantle markets. The people of Fremantle also have a deep love for its Australian Rules football team, the Dockers, whose season stretches from March to September.

Health Care

Competent doctors and fine modern hospitals are readily available both in Fremantle and neighboring Perth. All participants MUST have valid Australian medical insurance for the period of their stay. This coverage is a requirement for the student visa and is included in program costs. The visa costs, however, are a personal responsibility.
