Trinity CampusReligious Life

Students may attend religious services at the church at University College Dublin, Trinity College or any of the parishes located around Dublin. The program maintains a list of parishes with the times for masses, and will inform students of social service opportunities through churches and other organizations.

Transportation and Travel

Notre Dame will pay for your round-trip ticket to and from Dublin from the east coast of the US.

  • Around Dublin — Bus: The bus system in Dublin is probably the best way to get around. It generally costs about $2.55 to get anywhere in the city (you may also purchase a monthly pass). The bus from city center (Keough Naughton ND Study Centre) to UCD is bus #10. The cost is 1.7 euro each way and usually takes approximately one half hour, depending upon traffic. It is generally too far to walk. The buses usually stop running around 11 p.m. There are a few late-night buses, but they are more expensive and run infrequently.  For students traveling from UCD to city centre Dublin, a monthly bus pass might be the most economical. The rambler pass is for 30 days and does not have to be used consecutively.

  • Around Ireland — USIT Travel Save Stamp: If you are planning on taking any sort of plane or train trip it is worth the money to buy the student Travel Save stamp from a USIT (Students Travel Agency) office (located off O'Connell Bridge and on the UCD campus). It costs 4 euro and it will save you more than that on your first trip.

  • Around Ireland — Train: Travel by train is a relatively inexpensive, scenic way to get around. Make sure you get a Travel Save stamp before your first trip.

  • Around Europe — Plane: Air travel is the best way to get to the continent. USIT often runs special student deals, and their rates are very reasonable.

Housing and Meals

Students enrolling at UCD will live in dormitories with other international and Irish students.  Students will live in single rooms or doubles with shared kitchen facilities.  Click here for a link to the UCD accommodations site.

Students enrolling at Trinity will live in apartment-style residences at Trinity. Click here for a link to the Trinity accommodations site.

At both Trinity and UCD, students will shop for groceries and prepare meals in their kitchens.  Cafeterias and restaurants can be found on campus and in Dublin, but tend to be expensive.

Cultural and Recreational Opportunities

Cultural and recreational activities abound. The many sports and other clubs at UCD and Trinity allow for regular interaction between Notre Dame students and their Irish and international counterparts. The program staff at the Keough Center also arranges outings to the theater and musical events in Dublin. Much of Irish culture is centered around pub life. Getting a pint in the local pub is a great way to relax and meet some of the locals. Every semester the Dublin program sponsors one or two trips over a long weekend to such places in the beautiful Irish countryside as Clare, Connemara and Wexford.

Health Care
Both Trinity and UCD have health care services on campus which are free for students. Staff at the Keough Naughton Center will assist students with medical needs.  HTH study abroad insurance is also provided by ND for students in any study abroad program during the academic dates of the program.  Two private practice psychologists have been identified in Dublin as providers to any one in the program.

Pre-Professional Majors

The Pre-Professional Office prefers that students applying to med school during the summer after junior year remain on campus for the spring semester of their junior year in order to receive their advice for completing the med school application. UCD does not have an equivalent for the PHYC 30210 or PHYC 30220. OIS will not accept any student for spring study abroad in Dublin who is planning on applying to med school after their junior year.  Those students should apply for the fall semester only.  Students who will apply to med school after graduation and so state in their application may apply for the spring of their junior year.

Mendoza College of Business Majors

Please check the study abroad instructions on the MCOB site for an outline of the procedure to follow in completing a four-year plan of study and obtain academic approval. The MCOB usually post their approval procedure on-line.  Please check the listing of business courses offered 2009-2010 by the Quinn School of Business at UCD.   Students at UCD are also allowed to choose one economics courses from the Faculty of Arts if all of their other courses are from the Business course list. Courses listed within the Business and Law subject areas of UCD course modules may be considered with special permission from UCD instructors if all other courses taken are Business courses. Students in the Quinn School of Business must take 3 Business courses and can take as many as 4. They are not offered any Arts courses at UCD, but may take Arts courses at the Keough Naughton ND Study Centre. The MCOB has evaluated UCD business courses that will substitute for course requirements at ND.

Arts and Letters Majors

Arts students are pre-approved to take 18 credit hours while studying in the Dublin program.  Official application to the UCD Arts and Human Science Faculty requires you to choose two subject areas in which to concentrate your study.  Elective courses can be taken from the subjects of Film Studies, Irish Studies, Irish Folklore, and Canadian Studies.  Please check the listing of subject areas offered to Notre Dame students through UCD for pre-registration purposes.

Service Opportunities

The Dublin program is noted for its organized service opportunities.  There will be a service night towards the beginning of each semester in which representatives from different service organizations will meet with students.  These opportunities may include:

Aisling Project

St. Vincent DePaul Society

Study Buddy Tutoring Program

St. Louis Primary School
