Cambridge Program

Cambridge located 50 miles northeast of London is home to the University of Cambridge, which is the second oldest university in the English-speaking world. Cambridge is also one of the most prestigious universities in the world.  Instruction dates back to the 12th century.   Cambridge, like Oxford, is a collegiate university.  It is comprised of 31 colleges which are essentially self-governing units. King’s College, founded in 1441, is where Notre Dame students will live and study.

Starting in 2008-2009, three Notre Dame students will have an opportunity to spend their entire Junior year studying at King’s College, Cambridge.  There, in addition to classes, they will participate in Cambridge’s renowned system of supervisions.  Within this system, they will have an opportunity to work one-on-one with Cambridge’s scholars affording them an opportunity to develop and pursue focused academic interests.

The program is a year-long program and students participate during their Junior year.  At King’s, they will live in the college and have an opportunity to eat meals there.

Qualifications

The Cambridge Program is currently open to students of the Colleges of Arts and Letters, Science and Engineering.    King’s College will decide on a year-to-year basis what specific majors it can accept.

Application Procedure

Students will apply in the fall semester of their sophomore year to study at Cambridge the following year.  Meetings for interested students are held in the fall.  Students from the relevant majors with at least a 3.7 cumulative GPA are invited to apply. Students are selected for interview based on application.   Selections are announced by mid-November.

Social Life and Travel

Cambridge Program students will have an opportunity to integrate into the life of King’s College and the University of Cambridge.   They will live, eat and socialize with other Cambridge students.  They have the same access to libraries, other academic resources, athletic facilities and social organizations.   There are numerous university groups where students can pursue a variety of interests including art, music, film, theatre/drama and photography

Between terms, students may travel.   Cambridge is ideally located for exploring London, the rest of Britain, Ireland and continental Europe.
