Transportation and Travel
As is consistent with all ND programs, international airfare from a gateway city
is provided. Costs of other transportation
and personal travel throughout the year or semester abroad are borne by the student. Transportation
within Berlin is by way of the city's excellent subway system, by foot,
or by bus. Throughout the year, BCGS organizes a series of excursions
and cultural activities in and around Berlin to help orient students to
the city and provide a deeper understanding of German culture. Past trips
have included museums, memorials, monuments, the theater, the opera, Charlottenburg
Castle and Potsdam.
Housing and Meals
The Berlin program provides students with the opportunity to experience
different living situations during their time in Germany. Students meet
each other and are introduced to Berlin during orientation weekend, while
staying together as a group in a local hostel. After orientation, students
are placed into homestays with German families throughout Berlin for a
month of immersion into German language, culture, customs, and society
before University classes begin. Before the official start of the semester at Freie
Universität-Berlin and for the remainder of the program, students may choose
to live in dormitories or arrange their own housing in private apartments. A living allowance provided by OIS will help to defray some of the costs of housing and boarding costs incurred on this program.
Cultural and Recreational Opportunities
BCGS organizes a series of excursions and cultural activities in and
around Berlin. During the first six weeks of the program, students stay
with a German host family and the directors lead field trips to places
that help orient students to Berlin and provide a deeper understanding
of German culture. Past trips have included museums, memorials, monuments,
the theater, the opera, Charlottenburg Castle and Potsdam. Each semester,
German foundations or think tanks invite the program students to participate
in two- or three-day seminars where administrators, politicians and scholars
speak on topics such as German history, the political system, reunification,
and its role in the European Union. The students have traveled to Bonn,
Cologne, and Weimar to participate and often these trips include a free
afternoon, which allows students to explore the cities. BCGS students have
held internships with local government offices, banks, consulting firms,
cultural centers, political organizations and film production companies.
A high command of German and previous experience in the field of interest
are required.
Health Care
Participants must be adequately covered by international health insurance during the period of their stay abroad. Health insurance
costs are not included in the BCGS
program fees.
Costs
Please check the costs & fees page to review fees which may be incurred with this program. Students
will also be responsible for all other associated costs that are not included
in the basic program fees. See BCGS's tuition and fees webpage for further details.
