The University of Notre Dame Program in Athens, Greece operates in conjunction with College Year in Athens (CYA). CYA is a non-profit educational institution which was established in 1962. It offers approximately 80 undergraduate students, mainly from North America, a unique opportunity to study in the capital of Greece, a city of four million people. Greece is situated at the confluence of three continents — Europe, Asia and Africa. It is a country with resources, which can feed many passions — for archeology, ethnography, history, etc., and also for nature with her beautiful mountains, plains, islands and seas.

Program of Study

The CYA program offers university-level courses during either semester (September-December; January-May) or for the duration of the academic school year. Classes are taught in English and the program is organized in two curricula: Ancient Greek Civilization and East Mediterranean Area Studies.

With its Ancient Greek Civilization curriculum, College Year in Athens invites students to amplify their knowledge of ancient Greece and to deepen their understanding of Greece's fundamental contribution to the development of western civilization.

The East Mediterranean Area Studies curriculum focuses attention on S.E. Europe, W. Asia, and the Middle East in the time period between the founding of Constantinople (330 AD) to the present. It is an area of unusual importance in geopolitics, where Europe intersects with Asia and Africa and one whose problems and complexities, rooted in the past, pique the interest of students of history, politics and international affairs. Click here for links to CYA course information.

All courses completed are entered onto the student's transcript and grades are computed into the Notre Dame GPA.

Eligibility for the Program

The program is open to qualified sophomores and juniors of the University of Notre Dame. Seniors may be considered under special circumstances. Candidates must have at least a 2.5 GPA, must demonstrate adaptability to new situations, desire and motivation for residence and study abroad. Application deadline:November 15th for the fall, spring, or academic year.
