IES Summer Programs

The Office of International Studies (OIS) is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for Notre Dame faculty to teach an undergraduate course abroad during the summer of 2010.

OIS will review proposals for summer programs in the following locations:

  • ARGENTINA: Buenos Aires
  • AUSTRALIA: Melbourne, Sydney
  • AUSTRIA: Vienna
  • CHILE: Santiago
  • CHINA: Beijing, Shanghai
  • ECUADOR: Quito
  • FRANCE: Nantes, Paris
  • GERMANY: Berlin, Freiburg
  • INDIA: Delhi
  • IRELAND: Dublin
  • ITALY: Milan, Rome, Sienna
  • JAPAN: Nagoya, Tokyo
  • MOROCCO: Rabat
  • NETHERLANDS: Amsterdam
  • NEW ZEALAND: Auckland, Christchurch
  • SOUTH AFRICA: Cape Town

IES
OIS will work in conjunction with the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) to create up to four new faculty-led study abroad programs for Summer 2010.  IES is a global non-profit academic consortium that has provided international programming since 1950 and has been partnering with OIS to offer new summer programs since 2004.  You can find more about IES, their programs, and class offerings at www.iesabroad.org.

You will teach one 3-credit course and recommend a 2nd complementary course, which will be taught by a local professor hired by IES, to round out the program.  Students will receive Notre Dame credit for both courses.

Creating a Proposal
Faculty may propose to teach an existing Notre Dame course or create a new course that emphasizes a unique aspect of the city or region where the program will occur.  A strong proposal will utilize local resources and attract students.  Students are particularly interested in summer programs that allow them to fulfill University requirements while gaining the experience of living and studying in a foreign city.  The possibilities of what you may propose are endless, but consider offering these types of courses:

  • A major core course to appeal to high achieving freshmen or sophomores, allowing them to become acquainted with a faculty member and interested in the major
  • An upper level seminar for students with research aspirations
  • An interdisciplinary course combining history or political science and literature

Roles and Responsibilities
The faculty member will recruit and admit students for the study abroad program, obtain academic approvals from departments and core curriculum committees, and teach one course during the summer program.  Notre Dame’s OIS will be the link between the faculty member, IES, and Notre Dame administrative offices, such as the Registrar, Student Accounts, and Financial Aid.  Students will utilize the OIS on-line application to facilitate the application process.  IES will provide program planning support and on-site program coordination of classroom facilities, housing arrangements, field trips, and local faculty, as necessary.  IES has staff on site to provide student support services, leaving faculty to concentrate on teaching.

OIS emphasizes you are responsible for recruiting enough students to make your program successful.  You must have a minimum of 10 participants, however given OIS’s experience, we recommend recruiting at least 15 students as a handful of students inevitably decline acceptance or withdraw once accepted.  OIS provides support recruiting participants, but in the end, your effort and enthusiasm attract students to the program.  OIS will list the program on our website, will organize and advertise two information sessions for summer programs (one in November and one in February), and will monitor online applications.  You are expected to attend the information sessions to promote your program.  We also recommend you visit relevant classes, advertise within your department, and think of other ways to reach your target audience.

Compensation
The faculty member will receive a stipend of $5,665, a furnished two-bedroom apartment for the duration of the program, and roundtrip airfare from the United States.

Proposal Requirements
Please submit a proposal by July 15, 2009 to Liz LaFortune, Office of International Studies, 152 Hurley Building or llafortu@nd.edu.  The requirements for a proposal are:
