Vote for change
Michael Hourigan
senior
As a graduating senior, today's student body presidential election is not of particular importance to me. Through experience I have learned that it is nearly impossible for our student leaders to affect any meaningful degree of change at Notre Dame. I doubt that I am the only Domer who rolls my eyes at the mere sight of student leaders vainly attempting to improve student life.
The administration's policies are influenced almost universally by conservative beliefs. This method of governing has served the school extremely well. Therefore, it is not surprising that efforts made by students to attain change are met with strong resistance and usually are defeated soundly.
When viewed in light of this reality, it becomes clear that in order to attain even the slightest gains for students, our student body president must be especially bold, perhaps even to the point of being offensive. It is only through the creative, active and constant efforts by such a person that students can hope to bring about change.
I therefore appeal to all seniors to vote for the presidential candidate that fits this description. Give yourself the peace of mind to know that next year, wherever you may find yourself, the student body president of Notre Dame will be willing to break the status quo by whatever means are necessary. Help to make the conservative administration's worst nightmare become a reality.
I'm voting for Joe Muto.
