(1) I recently returned from attending the Solid State Materials and Devices (SSDM) 2005 conference in
Kobe, Japan. The conference, which has been around since 2000, was well attended and very professionally
run. The talks were of excellent quality and covered a broad range of topics from CMOS manufacturing to
growth of carbon nanotubes. Kobe was the perfect venue, is easy to get to from Kansai airport in Osaka, and
is very modern. I noticed that the attendance was mostly Japanese with a few Europeans and fewer Americans.
This is a shame, since the conference has the potential to become one of the IEEE’s most significant yearly events
Next year’s conference is scheduled for Nagoya, Japan. I recommend putting it on your conference schedule for
a closer look.

I am pleased to report that the NTC Newsletter will be in the capable hands of Professor Marc Cahay starting
with the next issue. I appreciate the support of all the readers who have submitted materials, and ask that all of you
who haven’t had the chance to contribute to the newsletter contact Marc with your submissions.

Warmest regards,

Gary

(4) The Regional Interest Group (RIG) in Bogota, Colombia of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) organized a
conference 'Nanotechnologia Presente y Futuro' in Bogota on August 25-26, 2005. The conference was co-sponsored
by the IEEE Colombia Section, BAYER Cropsciece, Galante R & A Ltda., Universidad Santo Tomás, Universidad San
Buenaventura, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Universidad Militar Nueva Granada, and Universidad Distrital. The
conference was held at the Bibliotecha Publica (Public Library) auditorium and attended by about 400 people from
all over Columbia. Over 60% of the participants were students from various Colombian universities. Dr. M. Meyyappan,
Director of the Center for Nanotechnology at NASA Ames Research Center and President-elect of IEEE-NTC was the
Keynote Speaker. His Keynote lecture titled "Nanotechnology: Opportunities and Challenges" covered nanotechnology as
an enabling technology in various sectors of the economy: electronics, computing, memory, data storage, communications,
materials, manufacturing, health and medicine, energy, environment, transportation, national security, etc.

Besides giving some emerging examples in each of these areas, he also provided a short, medium and long term forecast of the technologies and products, which can be expected. If you are interested in more information, please download the full report.

(7) The University of Notre Dame Center for Nano Science and Technology is proud to announce the recent installation of an Elionix model ELS-7700 electron beam lithography system. Elionix is a major supplier of EBL systems in Japan, and has recently expanded its operations to the U.S.The ELS-7700 is equipped with a 6-inch laser stage, thermal field emission source, and a 75 kV beam energy. The system at Notre Dame has already demonstrated feature sizes well below 10 nm.Contact Prof. Gary H. Bernstein at bernstein.1@nd.edu or 574-631-6269 for more information.

(8) PROMOTE HALF-YEAR DUES AND SOCIETY MEMBERSHIPS WITH WEB ADS FROM IEEE ONLINE PROMOTIONAL LIBRARY

IEEE editors, web developers and volunteers can help promote half-year dues and the value of IEEE Society membership with a variety of free web graphics available through the IEEE Online Promotional Library. These may be posted on any IEEE site, as well as sites for IEEE Societies and conferences.
To download ads, please visit the IEEE Online Promotion Library at: http://www.ieee.org/promolibrary. To find the half-year dues and Society ads, click on the link for "Browse Web Ads," then choose "Join IEEE" under the Membership category.
