(1) Hello NTC Community,
It's the beginning of June, and as usual I feel that summer is nearly over. Every year, that feeling comes sooner and now it happens halfway between midterms and finals. Two highlights of the summer, though, will be the IEEE Si-Nano Workshop in Honolulu, June 13-14,( http://www.nd.edu/~ndnano/si-nano/ ) and the IEEE-NANO Conference in Munich, August 17-19, (http://www.nano.ei.tum.de/ieeenano2004/). These events promise to be highly successful and will continue to help establish the NTC as an important resource to the IEEE community. Summer also gives us time to work on other projects that may not be central to our core missions, but are important nonetheless. At Notre Dame there is emerging a major organization of resources directed toward outreach in various forms, for both student and teacher development across all grade levels. Many of us feel that K-12 teachers benefit greatly by expanding their experiences with professionals in many fields across science and engineering.

The Notre Dame Center for Nano Science and Technology is playing its role by ensuring that the promising field of nanotechnology will be among them. There is a great deal of enthusiasm for hosting teachers and their students to work alongside research groups exploring new areas. I am confident that if you look around your institutions, academic or industrial, you will find that such activities either already exist or there are opportunities to start some. You might call a local school to see if teachers are interested in demonstrations or presentations. Summer is a great time to be thinking and working toward such things. If you have any nano-related outreach activities ongoing, I would be happy to know about them for future NTC Newsletters.

Thank you.
