June 18, 2003, J. Kaiser Revised Dec 29, 2009 J. Kaiser Communication between a VME/Camac data acquisition front end and one of the ULTRIX workstations (maxwell or curie) running Oak Ridge softwaretakes place over one of two 'virtual networks' named NSLNet 1 and NSLNet 2. These networks use the building network wiring and switches, but do NOT carry any other campus or Internet traffic. One network should have only ONE VME system and ONE workstation attached to it. This eliminates the possibility of a user on one workstation interfering with data acquisition on the other. Both workstations running the software are located on the mezzanine. Maxwell is always connected to NSLNet 1, while curie is connected to NSLNet 2. All areas where the front end might be located have jacks for both NSLNet 1 and NSLNet 2, so you can just plug your front end system into the jack for the net your workstation is on.
