JN Van de Graaff Accelerator

The 1MV model JN accelerator from High Voltage Engineering was moved to the NSL from the University of Toronto in 1996. It shares a vault and target room with the KN accelerator. The picture below shows the accelerator closed and ready for operation. The JN is primarily used to perform experiments of interest for Nuclear Astrophysics. Often, the JN is used in conjunction with the KN because it is able to deliver more intense beams below 600 keV. Like the KN, the JN has a RF ion source inside the terminal and usually runs Hydrogen or Helium beams with intensities up to 150 microamperes. The JN is still using original charging belts. Although operations will suffer during the construction phase of the new accelerator, the JN will continue operations in its current location after construction is complete and will continue to share a switching magnet with the new accelerator.
