| New finding affects understanding of formation of the solar system |

| Installation of New Accelerator Underway |

| Old KN Accelerator Ceased Operations |

| Professors Aprahamian and Wiescher give invited talks in Brazil |
| Professors Ani Aprahamian and Michael Wiescher gave invited talks at the Brazilian Physical Society's 45th anniversary celebrations. The meeting took place in Iguassu Falls, Brazil at a joint meeting of the Brazilian societies of Plasma, Materials and Condensed Matter, Particles and Fields, Nuclear, and Applied Physics. The meeting was attended by nearly 3,000 physicists including a number of Nobel laureates from all over the world. -- June 8, 2011 |

| New Spectrometer Installed in ISNAP |
| Through the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics (JINA), Professor Michael Wiescher leads an active research program in Nuclear Astrophysics within Notre Dame’s Nuclear Science Laboratory (NSL). The goal of this research is to better understand the nuclear reactions responsible for energy production and the creation of elements in stars. | Caprio recipient of 2010 Cottrell Scholar Award |
| Mark Caprio is the recipient of a 2010 Cottrell Scholar Award by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement, for the proposal "Symmetries in the nuclear many-body problem: Conquering the computational scale explosion." Membership in this elite group recognizes the recipient's exceptional potential as a leader in integrating science teaching and research. | Prof. Umesh Garg, Director of the Physics REU Program since 2000, has been elected to a 3-year term on the Executive Committee of the National Physics REU Leadership Group (NPRLG). | Basanta Nayak Wins the Homi Bhabha Science and Technology Award |
| Dr. Basanta Kumar Nayak,
a Research Associate at NSL during 2001-2003 and 2008-2009 has just
been awarded the Homi Bhabha Science and Technology Award, one of
the highest honors conferred by the Department of Atomic Energy
in India, in recognition of his outstanding contributions. The award
consists of a citation, a medal, and a cash prize of Rs. 500, 000
(~$11,500) and will be formally conferred on him at a ceremony on
October 29th. |
| APS India-US Visitation Award for Ayangeakaa and Matta |
| Graduate students Daniel
Ayangeakaa and James Matta have been selected by the American Physical
Society for the India-US Visitation Award this year. The India-US
Visitation Program funds the exchange of physicists and physics
graduate students between India and the United States. The Student
Visitation Program is intended for graduate students who wish to
pursue opportunities in physics such as to attend a summer institute
or work temporarily in a lab. The awards are funded by the Indo-U.S.
Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) and administered by APS. Typically,
five awards are made in each round of competition. |
| Washington High School at Notre Dame: Changing the face of physics |
| The Nuclear Science Laboratory and the Joint Institute of Nuclear Astrophysics has adopted the Washington High School in an effort to ultimately increase the representation of these underrepresented groups in the sciences and to offer this group of students opportunities that they may not have otherwise realized. | Preparation for a New 5MV Accelerator |
| The new 5 MV accelerator to be installed at the Nuclear Science Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame represents a major equipment upgrade. The accelerator will provide high intensity heavy ion beams for experiments at the St. George recoil separator, but it will also increase the intensities for proton and alpha beams. | Umesh Garg recipient of Terrence Akai Award for Exceptional Service to International Students |
| In 2010 the Department of International Student Services and Activities (ISSA) initiated an annual award to honor the memory of Terrence "Terry" J. Akai, a beloved faculty member, dean, and long-time advocate for international students. Dr. Akai became a member of the Notre Dame faculty in 1976 and later served as Senior Associate Dean of the Graduate School from 1994 until his death in 2009. |

| Wiescher named AAAS Fellow |
| Michael Wiescher, Freimann Professor of Physics, has been named one of three University of Notre Dame fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in honor of their scientifically and socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. AAAS, founded in 1848 as a nonprofit association, is the world’s largest scientific society and the publisher of the prestigious journal Science. -- January 21, 2010 |
| Kolata named APS Outstanding Referee |
| Physics Professor James Kolata has been selected by the American Physical Society as an Outstanding Referee for 2009. The Outstanding Referee program was instituted in 2008. The highly selective award program recognizes scientists who have been exceptionally helpful in assessing manuscripts for publication in APS journals. Like Fellowship in the APS, this is a lifetime award. By initiating the program, APS expresses its appreciation to all referees, whose efforts in peer review not only keep the standards of the journals at a high level, but in many cases also help authors to improve the quality and readability of their articles – even those that are not published by APS. -- January 21, 2010 |
