Third Circular
July 27, 2005
Dear Colleagues,
This is the third and final
circular for CGS-12, the 12th international Conference on Capture Gamma-Ray
Spectroscopy and Related Topics, to be held from September 4-9, 2005 at
the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana (USA).
This circular has contains
information about the preliminary program, the structure of the meeting,
and associated activities.
A preliminary conference program
as well as an electronic abstract booklet is now posted at the conference
website http://www.nd.edu/~nsl/cgs12.
The venue
for the conference is the Center for Continuing Education at the University
of Notre Dame. Lodging and registration can be made through the conference
website. Hotel reservations for CGS-12 attendees were held at the Morris
Inn (across the street from the conference center) the special conference
rate until August 1, 2005. Please make arrangements and register if you
have not already done so. Registration can be made online from the conference
website http://www.nd.edu/~nsl/cgs12.
The conference banquet will be on a ship sailing from Chicago and we will
need to know in advance all the names of participants and accompanying
persons that intend to be on the ship.
In addition to the program
of the conference, we have organized a workshop on Isomers
starting at 9:00am on Sunday September 4.
All CGS-12 participants who are in town already are welcome to attend.
In recent years, research on nuclear isomers has generated a lot of excitement.
There are interesting new trends besides the continuing efforts in understanding
isomers in exotic nuclei to exploring the applications of isomers in nuclear
astrophysics as well as energy storage. If you are interested in taking
part in the workshop, please contact Prof. Yang Sun (ysun@nd.edu)
as soon as possible.
On Sunday
evening, there is conference registration and a reception
in the courtyard of the University of Notre Dame Snite Museum of Art with
live music provided by the Nuclear Jazz
Quarktet. The collections of the Snite Museum
of Art place it among the finest university art museums in the USA. The
Fritz & Millie Kaeser Mestrovic Studio Gallery of the museum is featuring
the BRANCACCI PROJECT - PHASE ONE. In this series of
murals, Bill Sandusky, professor of art at Saint Mary’s College, reinterprets,
the fresco cycle painted in the Brancacci Chapel of Santa Maria del Carmine
in Florence, Italy by Masaccio, Masolino and Filipino Lippi between about
1424 and 1480. We have arranged for Prof. Sandusky to be available in
the gallery on Sunday evening.
The sessions
of the conference will begin on Monday morning
(Sept. 5) at 8:30am and end by the end of day on Friday evening (Sept.
9). On Monday evening, there
will be a special session on nuclear data along with a reception. Tuesday
evening is the poster session. We ask all poster presenters to
be ready to hang their posters on arrival. There will be a prize of $500
awarded to the best poster presented by a postdoctoral fellow or
a graduate student. A selection committee of 3 distinguished scientists
will be judging the posters. The prize is funded by Prof. Steven Yates
of Kentucky University for CGS-12 in honor of the memories of Jean Kern
and Raman Subramanian (Founder’s Award) and it will be awarded at the
banquet. The conference banquet will take place on
Wednesday Sept. 7 aboard a ship and will include
an architectural tour of the city of Chicago from the Chicago River. Thursday
evening, conference participants are invited to the “Physics
and Film” series hosted by JINA (Joint Institute of Nuclear Astrophysics),
the Department of Physics, and the Performing Arts Center of the University
of Notre Dame). Friday evening,
there will a performance of music, poetry and stories by the Ensemble
Galilei with projected images from the Hubble Space Telescope.
The proceedings
of the conference will be published by AIP. Detailed instructions for
authors as well as templates in latex or MS Word are available online
for the 6x9 inch format at http://proceedings.aip.org.
The manuscripts will be collected at the beginning of the conference during
registration on September 4, 2005. Invited talks will have up to 8 pages,
oral contributions will have up to 5 pages, and poster presentations will
have 2 pages.
We have also arranged for
a number of exciting events for accompanying
persons, including private tours of the new Performing
Arts complex at Notre Dame, tours of the collections at the Snite Art
Museum, a visit to Fernwood botanical garden and nature reserve (Eight
acres of beautiful gardens are tucked into a scenic valley along the St.
Joseph River, completely surrounded by forest. There are miles of trails
to explore. Indoors, visitors enjoy the nature center, fern conservatory,
café, gift shop, and art gallery.), and a visit to Amish Country nearby.
However, we need to know in advance the number of participants interested
in these activities. Please let me know as soon as possible.
Looking forward to seeing you
at CGS-12! Please do not hesitate to contact me.
