Lab Tour
The Laboratory for Biocultural Studies includes facilities for osteology, forensic anthropology, archaeometry, inorganic chemistry, and archaeology research. Four large Near Eastern skeletal collections are available.
Several Macs, a large library of bioachaeology resources, and teaching and research space will be provided in the Lab.
Lectures
Faculty
The first 2-3 weeks of class will be spent learning the osteological and statistical methods needed for the research projects. Each week, an interdisciplinary team of scholars from a variety of institutions will speak to the class, providing an example of the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to reconstructing the past.
A series of evening ethics dinners will be held in a setting away from the lab to discuss issues related to scientific conduct, the politics of excavation, treatment of artifacts, and repatriation. These seminars provide an informal atmosphere to facilitate open conversation.

A specific area of inquiry will be targeted for each summer program. For 2009, students will work on a joint project studying childhood health and adaptibility, collecting data with a partner on a particular dimension of that foci (demographics, disease, diet, etc.) These projects will build upon data already amassed, permitting the summer team to significantly contribute to an aspect of the overall biocultural model. Students will be encouraged to continue their projects for presentation at professional meetings.
