Four Year Scholarship

The window in which to apply for the NROTC four-year scholarship is March of the junior year of high school to January of the senior year of high school. The scholarship will pay for tuition and a monthly stipend for all four years of college. It will also pay the Midshipman up to $750 each year for books and academic fees. The student must list three colleges on the scholarship application. The scholarship will be assigned by the Navy to one of those three colleges. Due to its popularity, scholarships are quickly assigned to Notre Dame, and Notre Dame reaches its maximum number of assignments very early in the process. Therefore, if a student is interested in attending Notre Dame on a NROTC scholarship, Notre Dame must be listed as the first college.

Upon commissioning, the Midshipman must serve eight years of Naval service, a minimum of four of those eight must be active duty; the remaining can be served in the Naval Reserve. Scholarship applications may be obtained from your local Navy Recruiting office. Information about specific NROTC programs can be obtained from those NROTC units at colleges. The NROTC unit at Notre Dame's phone number is 1-877-636-7682. [TOP]

Two Year Scholarship

NROTC also offers a two-year scholarship program covering the final two years of college. It provides tuition, fees, textbooks and uniforms for two academic years and a stipend for a maximum of 20 months. The program is open to college students who will complete their sophomore year or third year in a five-year curriculum.

When accepted, students undergo six-and-a-half-week course at the Naval Science Institute on Newport, RI, during the summer between their sophomore and junior years to bring them up-to-date on the NROTC curriculum missed during their freshmen and sophomore years.

Students who complete all NROTC program requirements are commissioned ensigns, US Naval Reserve, or second lieutenants, Marine Corps Reserve, upon graduation and incur a four-year active duty obligations from the dates of their appointments. Total military service obligation is eight years of combined active and reserve duty.

For information on eligibility requirements and application procedures, students should contact their NROTC units. [TOP]

College Program

The College Program is for students who do not have a Navy ROTC scholarship and want to enter the NROTC program. The Navy will provide uniforms and books for Naval Science courses. The student will have to pay for all other expenses (tuition, room & board, any other fees). Any freshman already attending or accepted to a school with a NROTC unit may apply for the College Program. To begin the application process, the student should contact the NROTC unit. The phone number of the NROTC unit at Notre Dame is 574-631-7274 or 1-877-636-7682. The College Program Midshipman will participate fully in all battalion events like those Midshipmen on scholarship. Except financially, there are no differences between Midshipmen on scholarship and those in the College Program.

If a College Program Midshipman does not obtain a scholarship while in NROTC (Scholarship applications are made at the end of each semester until the junior year.), his/her obligated service upon commissioning is 3 years of active duty service. The College Program Midshipman must sign a contract of obligation with the Navy on the first day of the junior year and apply for advanced standing. If advanced standing is granted by the Navy, the Midshipman will receive a monthly stipend of $350 during each month for the junior year and $400 per month during senior year. [TOP]

Nursing Scholarships

Four-year NROTC scholarships are available to students interested in pursuing bachelor of science degrees in nursing (BSN). If selected for a scholarship, the selectee must major in a nursing degree program leading to a BSN. Upon graduation, Nurse NROTC Scholarship Program midshipmen will be commissioned as reserve officers in the Navy Nurse Corps. Nurse NROTC eligibility and selection processes are the same as the regular four-year NROTC Scholarship Program requirements. Academic, physical and military requirements differ slightly from regular NROTC. Nursing scholarships are available at Saint Mary's College and Indiana University at South Bend only. Notre Dame does not have a nursing program. Saint Mary's Nursing Home Page [TOP]
