The University of Notre Dame maintains outstanding facilities in the areas of environmental science and engineering, including several centers for environmental research. The Departments of Biological Sciences http://www.science.nd.edu/biology/ , Chemical Engineering http://www.nd.edu/~chegdept/, and Civil Engineering & Geological Sciences http://www.nd.edu/~cegeos/ contain state-of-the-art laboratory and computational facilities for the development and testing of novel chemicals such as ionic liquids, for the study of colloidal phenomena and aquatic chemistry, for investigations involving bacteria-water-rock interactions, for the characterization of flow and transport response, and for the study of the ecological impact of novel chemicals in controlled artificial stream and lake environments. All of these facilities will be available to GAANN Scholars. In addition, scholars will have access to exceptional resources including natural aquatic habitats at the University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center (UNDERC) http://129.74.130.84/underc/underc1.htm and a vast array of analytical facilities at the Center for Environmental Science and Technology (CEST) http://www.nd.edu/~cest/.
