Registration: Registration is available electronically on Notre Dame's NROTC website located at http://www.nd.edu/~nlw and the information necessary to complete it is on a form in this correspondence. Registration cost for this year’s event is $200.00 per midshipman/cadet, which includes all meals and lodging expenses. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis with the first 125 Midshipmen and Cadets housed in Sacred Heart Parish, an on-campus facility. Registration deadline is 20 February 2009 and payment deadline is 5 March 2009. A $25 late feel will be charged to those who register after 20 February. If payment is not received by 5 March, participants from the waiting list will take precedence.
Staff Members: Active duty unit staff members (STA-21 and OC’s are considered students) who wish to attend Naval Leadership Weekend are welcome and encouraged. Staff Member registration fees are $75.00. This covers conference materials and the evening meal on Friday and Saturday. Staff members are responsible for their own lodging. We recommend the Hilton Garden Inn at 574-232-7700. Please contact the Action Officer, LT Drew DeWalt at ddewalt@nd.edu or 574-631-6065 for any questions concerning these and other costs.
Arrival and Check-In: Arrival is scheduled for 1200-1800 on Thursday, 19 March 2009 at Notre Dame’s Sacred Heart Parish Center. Students who are expecting to arrive outside of this window should be specific when entering their registration information (see "Directions" at http://www.nd.edu/~nlw/nlw_contact.html).
Transportation: It is highly recommended that all air travelers arrive and depart through the South Bend Regional Airport. This airport is located only five miles away from campus, and cab fare from the airport to campus is $10-$20. There will be Notre Dame NROTC midshipmen providing transportation to and from the South Bend airport on both Thursday and Sunday. In the past many units have found that flights in and out of Chicago are much cheaper, anyone flying into and out of Chicago O'Hare or Midway is advised to use Coach USA/United Limo Services, a commercial bus service, which operates between O'Hare and Notre Dame's campus approximately every three hours. For information on this service call (574) 254-5000 or 1-800-833-5555 or the schedule can be viewed at http://www.coachusa.com/tristatelimo/. Otherwise a rental car must be secured. Ground travel between O'Hare and Notre Dame usually varies between two and three hours depending upon traffic conditions in the chicago area. Keep in mind that Notre Dame is in the Eastern Time Zone and Chicago is in the Central Time Zone.
Lodging: Lodging for the 125 visiting students is located at the Sacred Heart Parish Center on the Notre Dame campus. Once roomas are assigned, trading is not allowed. It is recommended to bring an alarm clock, since Sacred Heart Parish Center rooms are not equipped with them. Visiting Staff members are encouraged to stay at the Comfort Suites Hotel, located off the Indiana Toll Road with a government rate of $92 per night. Address: 52939 Indiana State Route 933 (574)-272-1500. We also recommend the Hilton Garden Inn at 574-232-7700.
Exercise Facilities: Use of the campus gyms will be made available to students with full coverage clothing and appropriate shoes (ie. t-shirts over sports bras, no halter tops, no muscle tank tops).
Uniform: The uniform for all official events is Service Dress Blues/Class A’s. Note: South Bend’s weather can be somewhat unpredictable in March (it is typically very cold), so be sure to plan attire according to weather (i.e. bringing a uniform jacket is recommended).
Civilian Clothes: The pizza party Thursday night is a casual event, while the press box dinner is the Uniform of the Day. Please note appropriate civilian attire means no flip flops, sleeveless shirts, sweatpants, or short skirts/shorts. Please dress appropriately.
Miscellaneous: Be sure to check the NLW website at http://www.nd.edu/~nlw for updates. The action officer LT Drew DeWalt at (574) 631-6065 / ddewalt@nd.edu or the Naval Leadership Weekend Coordinator MIDN 2/C Jennifer Malherek at jmalhere@nd.edu are also available to answer your questions.
