Disposition Definitions-

The University of Notre Dame Security/Police Department uses the following dispositions in closing out case reports and investigations. The definition of the disposition is a summary from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting Handbook (UCR):

  • Arrest-When a person is arrested; charged with the commission of the offense; and turned over to the court for prosecution.
  • Exceptional-When a suspect is identified as having committed a crime, but the victim does not wish to prosecute, or the  judicial branch of government declines to prosecute.
  • Unfounded-A complaint which is determined through investigation to be false or baseless.

Case reports may also be closed out by:

  • Pending-A complaint which has been investigated, but currently lacks sufficient information to determine who committed the crime.
  • Administrative-A complaint which is reviewed and determined to be non-criminal in nature.
