April 19 - 21, 2012 NAIGC Nationals - Salt Palace Convention Center
Gymnastics Nationals 2012 were hosted by the NAIGC in Salt Lake City, Utah, Thursday, April 19th through Saturday April 21st. The event was held at the Salt Palace Convention Center located in downtown Salt Lake City.
The Gymnastics Club of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's just returned from a long trip to the NAIGC Nationals, where the competition was fun and fierce! Approximately 400 women and 200 men participated in the three day event.
Over 60 teams were present as well as some competitors competing unattached. Many state champions from high school days and even former Division I gymnasts participated. The level of competition ranged from "okay' to "unbelievable".
The Irish, who competed in the 2nd session out of 5, performed well in their last meet of the season.
The ND-SMC women were represented by sophomore Emily Siebert and freshmen Christa Costello and Gianna Ventrella.
Emily posted scores of 9.0 on Floor tying her for 53rd out of approximately 350 competitors, and 8.3 on the Balance Beam, tying her for 88th also out of 350, and an 8.3 on Vault placing 77th out of well over 300 competitors.
Christa Costello scored a 6.2 on Floor reinjuring an older ankle injury and then gamely hit an 8.05 on Vault with that gimpy ankle.
Gianna Ventrella scored a 4.65 on the Uneven Bars and later a 4.65 on Floor tweaking her knee during the performance.
On the men's side was Irish senior Mike Hannigan. Hannigan posted a very strong score on Rings, a season high 13.0, which placed high 25th out of about 150 competitors. He scored an 11.4 on the Vault and a 9.1 on his Floor routine.
The Irish now look forward to the 2012-2013 season which is especially promising considering the plethora of young talent on the team and the new leadership.
The Irish gymnasts got some time to tour Temple Square and also the Great Salt Lake. Emily Siebert got some time to mountain bike at the Olympic Park. The ND-SMC gymnasts had a great time in Salt Lake City, competing, meeting old and new friends, and getting a chance to see some sights.
Former ND-SMC Club president Pat Gorman is now competing for Cal Berkeley and was the only male gymnast who had music for his Floor routine!
At the end of the meet, the NAIGC Directors announced the 2013 NAIGC Nationals will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

March 24, 2012 – Michigan Madness Meet – Eastern Michigan University
The Notre Dame and St. Mary's Gymnastics Club ventured to Ypsilanti Michigan on the 24th to compete in Eastern Michigan's annual Michigan madness Meet.
Teams from the following schools attended this event:

The men's team finished 4th overall with just two performers freshman Spencer Kieffer and senior Mike Hannigan.
Spencer competed in all six men's events finishing 3rd in the All Around with scores of 9.8 on the Floor, 11.6 on Pommel Horse, 12.4 on Still Rings, 12.4 on Vault, 11.3 on parallel Bars and 8.6 on High Bar. Keiffer's scores earned him a 4th place ribbon on Pommel Horse, a 3rd place medal on Rings, a 10th place ribbon on Vault, a 4th place ribbon on Parallel Bars and an 8th place ribbon on High Bar. This was Spencer's first competition and he had a terrific day for the Irish.
Mike Hannigan scored a 10.2 on floor, a 12.6 on Still Rings, and an 11.8 on Vault. Mike's 12.6 on Rings earned him a 2nd place medal.
Each men's event had about 25 participants.
The women's team consisted of junior Brianna Bocardo, senior Elizabeth Bonne, freshman Christa Costello, sophomore Emily Siebert, sophomore Kelsey Teske, and freshman Gianna Ventralla.
Brianna scored a 5.75 on Floor for her only performance. Liz Bonne, in her last meet, decided to compete in every event! She scored an 8.5 on Vault tying for 9th place, a 6.05 on Floor, and 6.7 on the Uneven Bars, and a 7.9 on the Beam.
Christa Costello scored an 8.8 on the Vault tying her for 6th place, and 8.15 on the Floor, and an 8.3 on the Beam. Emily Siebert scored an 8.7 on the Vault tying her for 7th place, and 8.6 on Floor, and an 8.5 on Beam for a 10th place finish.
Kelsey Teske scored a 9.0 on Vault tying her for 5th, and 8.2 on Floor, an 8.2 on the Uneven Bars tying her for 10th, and an 8.6 on the Beam tying her for 8th. Kelsey had a very nice day. Gianna Ventrella scored an 8.3 on Vault, a 7.35 on Floor, a 6.7 on the Uneven Bars, and a 5.7 on the Beam.
Each of the women's events had between 55 and 80 individual participants. Overall, the women's team finished 8th against some very strong team and individual competition!
April 7 – 9, 2011 Nationals - Greater Richmond Convention Center
Nationals 2011 were hosted by the NAIGC in Richmond, Virginia, Thursday, April 7 through Saturday April 9. The event was held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
The Gymnastics Club of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's just returned from a long trip and a successful round at NAIGC Nationals, held in Richmond, Virginia. The meet, held in the Greater Richmond Convention Center, was host to 129 teams from all across the country. The Irish, who competed in the 4th session out of 6, performed well in their last meet of the season.
The women, comprised of senior Kristin Smith, junior Sarah Cole, sophomore Bryanna Bocardo, and freshman Kelsey Teske, posted especially strong scores on vault with scores of 7.9, 8.0, 7.8 and 8.45 respectively. Teske, in her freshman appearance at Nationals showed impressive skill as she placed 25th in the session.
On the men's side was Irish senior Patrick Gorman. Gorman posted a strong score on vault of 12.0 and was able to place 26th all-around in session 4 and 68th overall in the all-around competition. The Irish now look forward to the 2011-2012 season which is especially promising considering the plethora of young talent on the team.

March 26, 2011 – Michigan Madness Meet – Eastern Michigan University
During the last week of March, the Gymnastics Club of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's traveled to Ypsilanti to compete in Eastern Michigan University's annual Michigan Madness meet. The meet featured 16 teams and strong competition including teams from:

- Eastern Michigan
- University Dayton
- Grand Valley State
- Iowa Kentucky
- Miami of Ohio
- Michigan
- Michigan State
- NAIGC Alumni
- Northern Illinois
- Penn State
- Saginaw Valley State

This was one of the strongest performances for the Irish gymnasts, especially from the women. Saint Mary's freshman Kelsey Teske once again posted a strong all-around score with a 32.2. Strong scores were also posted on floor for the Irish women with a 9.2 from ND junior Sarah Cole and a 9.3 from ND freshman Emily Siebert. The women also scored especially well on vault with scores of 8.2, 8.35, 8.4, and 8.6 from ND senior Kristin Smith, ND sophomore Bryanna Bocardo, SMC junior Elizabeth Bonne, and Teske, respectively.
The Irish men also performed well highlighted by ND Junior Mike Hannigan's all-around score of 52.8. The men also posted strong scores on rings with a 10.9 from ND Senior Patrick Gorman and an 11.2 from Hannigan.
The team's next and final competition will be the NAIGC Nationals Meet held in Richmond, Virginia from April 6-10.
February 26, 2011, Clover Classic – Notre Dame
This past Saturday, February 26th, the ND/SMC Gymnastics Club hosted their annual home meet, the Clover Classic. The meet was held at Gymnastics Michiana in Mishawaka, where the Club holds their practices. Although the meet has not been held in a few years, teams came from near and far to compete. In addition to the Irish team, competing teams included
University of Dayton, Grand Valley State University, University of Illinois, University of Iowa, Kent State University, University of Kentucky, Michigan State University, University of Minnesota, and Virginia Tech.
Competing for the Irish women were ND Senior Kristin Smith, Junior Sarah Cole, Sophomores Bryanna Bocardo and Katie Carney, Freshmen Emily Siebert and Mary Katheryn Snyder, as well as SMC Junior Elizabeth Bonne, and Freshmen Bridget McMillan and Kelsey Teske. Siebert and Teske, highlighting a strong young team for the Irish women, posted big scores on the day. Teske's 8.5 on floor and 7.8 on beam earned her 19th place and 18th place respectively while Siebert's 8.35 on floor and 8.1 on beam earned her 22nd and 16th respectively out of a considerably large women's field of over 80 competitors. The Irish women placed 7th all-around despite strong scores of 30.1 from Teske, 28.15 from Carney, and 22.7 from Snyder.
Competing for the Irish men were ND Senior Patrick Gorman, and Juniors Mike Hannigan and Kyle Sandberg. Sandberg's solid score of 12.1 on floor was good enough to earn him 8th out of a very strong men's field. Other strong performances came from Hanningan who placed 5th on rings with a score of 12.4 and placed 6th all-around with a score of 61.0. Not far behind was Gorman who placed 8th all-around with a 55.5. The men's performance was good enough to earn them 4th overall, missing the 3rd Place trophy by just .2 points. February 12, 2011, Golden Grips – Purdue University
On Saturday February 12th, the ND/SMC Gymnastics Club traveled to Purdue for the Boilermaker's annual Golden Grips Invitational Meet. This was the first meet of the season for the Irish, and the team showed great promise. The women's team, comprised of Kelsey Teske, Mary Katheryn Snyder, Elizabeth Bonne, and Sarah Cole placed 8th in team standings. The finish was bolstered by a huge score of 33.55 by Teske, a Saint Mary's Freshman, who placed 14th overall.
On the men's side, strong scores were posted by juniors Mike Hannigan and Kyle Sandberg and senior Patrick Gorman, who led the team to a 4th place finish. Hannigan additionally took 4th on rings with a score of 8.3. The Gymnastics Club's next meet is their home meet, the Clover Classic, which will be held on Friday February 26th at Gymnastics Michiana in Mishawaka.
April 8 – 11, 2010 Nationals - Texas State University
Irish gymnasts returned from a successful round at NAIGC Nationals, held at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. The women’s team, with 5 competitors, fared well against steep competition. Freshman Bryanna Bocardo, following an ankle injury, completed floor with a 4.15. Sophomore Sarah Cole turned in a solid bars performance with a 4.65. Lastly, sophomores Olivia Schreader, Elizabeth Bonne, and Ellie Frawley had strong vaults, with scores of 7.925, 7.2, and 6.5, respectively. Schreader also competed in the all-around, finishing with a 23.725.
On the men’s side, four competitors showed their strength in the field of competitors. Sophomores Kyle Sandberg and Chris Price, despite last-minute routine changes, had great floor routines with scores of 11.4 and 10.3, respectively. Sophomore Mike Hannigan stood out on the rings with a score of 11.6. Lastly, grad student Brian Dunn turned in a vault of 13.3, a large factor in his all-around score of 66.3.
Competing with a full complement of men and women gymnasts, Notre Dame enjoyed a very successful meet at Eastern Michigan’s Michigan Madness this weekend.
Sophomore Michael Hannigan led the men’s squad with a first place finish on rings, and a 6th place finish in the all around with a score of 66.5. Junior Patrick Gorman completed a strong all around performance as well, highlighted by a 10.9 on floor and 11.9 on vault for a 7th place all around of 62.4. Sophomore Kyle Sandberg, in only his second competition, registered a 10.6 on floor and 11.3 on vault. Brian Dunn showed strong scores with a 10.7 on high bar, an 11.7 on parallel bars, a 12.5 on vault. The men’s squad finished second in team standings.
The Irish women’s team featured four new competitors to collegiate gymnastics. Sophomore Sarah Cole showed an impressive 7.0 on floor and 7.2 on the beam. Ellie Frawley, another sophomore - returning to gymnastics after a 12-year hiatus - finished with a 6.0 on floor and 8.0 on vault. Sophomore Courtney Dahms additionally posted excellent scores with a 7.6 on beam and 8.0 on vault. Unfortunately, the 4th new member, freshman Bryanna Bocardo, sustained an ankle injury during her floor routine and was not able to continue with competition. Veterans Elizabeth Bonne and Olivia Schreader posted career highs with Bonne receiving an 8.6 on vault and Schreader receiving a 7.3 on floor and 8.35 on vault. ND grad and former team president, Kelleen O’Leary, competed on an Alumni team; and scored 9.4 on beam to finish 2nd in the entire competition.
February 13, 2010 – Golden Grips – Purdue University
This past weekend the gymnastics club sent 5 participants to the Golden Grips meet at Purdue University. The team consisted of 2 veteran competitors and 3 athletes competing in their first collegiate meet. Patrick Gorman returned to competition by competing all-around with high scores including an excellent 7.3 on vault. Additionally, in his first collegiate appearance, Mike Hannigan competed all-around, highlighted by a score of 8 on rings. This garnered a 6th place finish.
Kyle Sandberg and Chris Price had excellent meets - both competing for their first time ever, let alone in college competition. Kyle had a great 7.4 on vault while Chris excelled on the parallel bars. Lastly, Olivia Schreader was ND’s only female competitor and turned in an 8.3 on beam and an 8.2 on vault. The team is looking forward to their next competition at Eastern Michigan in March, when it plans to field a full squad.
