Rafael Deheza
Rafael Deheza was born in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
In 2006, he graduated from el Colegio Aleman in Santa
Cruz. Prior to graduation, he spent six months studying
in Germany. Rafael is currently pursuing both a Civil
Engineering degree and a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Notre Dame. He
chose to attend college in America because he desires the
best education available, and he chose to attend Notre
Dame because he was curious about the Catholic tradition
and American football. Building and design have always
intrigued Rafael, so he plans to specialize in structural
engineering. The ND SEED project particularly appeals to
him due to the opportunity to help others. He hopes to
learn more about surveying, engineering materials, and
Honduras. In the summer of 2008, Rafael worked for the
construction division of the mayor's office in Santa Cruz.
His experience speaking Spanish on a construction
site was especially valuable for the bridge
construction in Honduras. In his free time, he loves playing soccer and
watching college football. After graduation in 2011, Rafael
hopes to begin his career in the United States.
Anna Lacey
Anna graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in
Civil Engineering. She became
interested in civil engineering primarily because of the many
opportunities for service within the field. She regards the
ND SEED project as the "perfect project"; she was particularly
excited for the hands-on aspects as well as building a
relationship with the community in Honduras. During her time at Notre Dame, Anna did various research. While studying abroad in
Australia in 2007, she researched the water jet cutting of clay
surfaces. She has also researched at Notre Dame for ISTIM
(Interdisciplinary Studies in Tsunami Impacts and Mitigation)
where she classified and databased pictures taken after the SE
Asia tsunamis and analyzed tsunami damage.
Additionally, Anna spent the summer of 2007 interning with Hunt
Engineering Company in their civil and geotechnical departments.
Anna was the secretary of the Notre Dame Chapter of Chi Epsilon
(the National Civil Engineering Honors Society) and a member of
ASCE (the American Society of Civil Engineers). During her free
time, Anna enjoys running, going to
the Jersey Shore, and rocking out at concerts. Originally from
Richmond, VA, Anna lives in a suburb of Philadelphia – she will start her career with Jacobs Engineering in Philly in the fall of 2009.
Patrick McHugh
Patrick has lived in many places, including Seoul, Korea, and
Virginia, where he graduated from Randolph Macon Academy in 2006.
Now that his dad retired from the military, Patrick lives in
North Pole, Alaska. He is in his final year at the University of
Notre Dame working towards a degree in Civil Engineering while specializing in Environmental Engineering.
Patrick's interest for this major grew after he did a bridge
design project in high school. Both of his parents are Notre Dame
alumni, so Patrick's decision to go there was not hard.
When not studying or working with the ND SEED team, Patrick likes
to play basketball at the Rockne memorial. Also, once a week Patrick tutors at
the South Bend Juvenile Correctional Facility. After spending part
of the summer of 2007 in London, Patrick's interest for different
cultures grew stronger. The two visits to Honduras with ND SEED had a great impact on Patrick.
Sean McNichols
It's hard to see how Sean has time outside of marathon running, boxing,
skydiving, and bungee jumping to do much else. Somehow though, Sean
finds the time to engineer. A recent graduate from the University of
Notre Dame, Sean earned a bachelor's in Civil Engineering in May
2009. Sean particularly values his engineering experience outside of
the classroom. He worked as a project management intern with Clark
Construction Group on the Headquarters Project of United States
Institute of Peace in Washington, DC. Further, Sean is a member of ASCE,
Tau Beta Pi, and Chi Epsilon. In the fall semester of his junior year,
Sean studied at University of Western Australia where in addition to
having a go at surfing, he researched the economic viability of
harvesting breaking ocean wave energy. More importantly though (and much
more annoyingly), Sean learned words such as "sweet-as", "heaps",
"hell-good" and "TA." Sean loved the opportunity to implement
sustainable engineering infrastructure in the developing world and work with the community in Honduras. Sean will join Deloitte Consulting as a Business
Technology Analyst in Chicago in the fall of 2009. As Sean hails from the state of Ohio, we
all think spending his breaks in Honduras was a wise decision. Good on
ya mate.
Katie Sushinsky
Katie graduated in May 2009 with a bachelor's degree in Civil
Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. Hailing from Rockville, MD, the first time
she knew that she wanted to be a civil engineer was while sitting in
traffic in the "Mixing Bowl" in Springfield, VA. During her freshman
year at the University of Notre Dame, a lecture was taught on service
in engineering which prompted Katie into finding an engineering service
project. ND SEED's project allowed her to have a better
understanding of the design process, gain experience and knowledge by
interacting with a new culture, as well as bond with the team. In 2006,
Katie worked with abused and abandoned kids in Washington DC and also
gutted houses for Hurricane Katrina victims in New Orleans. In the spring
of 2008, she tutored low-income high school students through the program
Upward Bound. The ND SEED project allowed her to continue service in
conjunction with engineering. Her experience includes researching the
water jet cutting of clay surfaces while studying abroad in Australia in
the fall of 2007 and interning with Clark Construction Group in Bethesda,
MD last summer. She will start her career with Clark
but in its Western Region. She was the editor of the Notre Dame Chapter of
Chi Epsilon as well as a member of Tau Beta Pi and ASCE. During her free
time she enjoys playing sports, especially soccer.
Jessica Winschel
Jessica graduated with Anna, Sean, and Katie in May 2009 with bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. She hails from Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, but has certainly made her way around the world. Jessica
has spent a summer studying at the Goethe Institute in Munich, Germany.
Further, she attended Universidad de las Americas in México for a summer
in hopes of learning Spanish and gaining exposure to infrastructure in
less developed areas. While studying abroad in Perth at the University
of Western Australia, Jessica was involved in research of high velocity
water jet cutting. She also has research experience in the geotechnical
field in which she experimented with the possibility of using slag as an
alternative to cement. Jessica has interned at GAI Consultants gaining
experience in bridge design. She was the vice president of the Notre Dame
Chapter of Chi Epsilon as well as a member of Tau Beta Pi. During the
school year, Jessica worked at the South Bend Juvenile Correctional Facility
tutoring at-risk youth in math and reading. She has participated in several
service trips, including Appalachia and a Migrant Worker Seminar in Florida.
She enjoys running and spending time at her cottage on Lake Erie. She
loved working with the Peña Blanca community and building one
sweet-as bridge! Jessica will start her career with The Walsh Group in Chicago.
