Final Grades
Final grades are reported by the faculty
to the Office of the Registrar no later than 72 hours after the
end of final examinations. Final
grades are recorded on the student's academic record by term.
Academic standing and honors are based on final
grades. After the final grades are reported by the faculty,
students can view their grades on insideND.
Since the Fall 2003 semester, final grades have not been mailed
unless requested. If special circumstances required a paper copy
of term grades, a request form must
be completed and sent to the Office of the Registrar.
The information listed below applies to undergraduate,
graduate, and graduate business students. Quality point values below the lowest passing
grade for the student’s school (undergraduate, graduate, graduate business)
are calculated as 0.000. Law students
should refer to the Hoynes
Codes for grading regulations. See the links below for detailed information
about interpretation and processing.

Grades which may be assigned but which are not included in the computation
of the grade point average are as follows:
| S |
Satisfactory work (courses without semester credit hours,
as well as research courses, departmental seminars or colloquia or directed
studies; workshops; field eduction and skill courses). |
| U |
Unsatisfactory work (courses without semester credit hours,
as well as research courses, departmental seminars or colloquia or directed
studies; workshops; field education and skill courses). |
| V |
Auditor (graduate students only). |
| W |
Discontinued with permission. To secure a "W"
the undergraduate student must have the authorization of the dean. |
| P |
Pass in a course taken on a pass-fail basis. |
| NR |
Not reported. Final grade(s) not reported by the instructor
due to extenuating circumstances. |
If a GPA is not calculated for a recent semester, it is likely
due to a missing grade. Once the grade is recorded, a GPA will be
calculated and an academic standing for the term will be posted.
The information listed below lists the interpretation
of the Academic Code by the Office of the Registrar. Italicized information is published in
the duLac, Academic Code sections 18 through 20.
Quality Points for each course are calculated as follows:
(Only those grades listed above are calculated
into the GPA.)
(quality points representing letter grade) x (credit hour value
of the class) = quality points earned
Example:
John Smith earns an A in a 3 credit hour course.
4.000 x 3 cr. hrs. = 12.000 quality points.
To calculate the semester G.P.A.:
(sum of quality points for each class) )
(sum of credit hours attempted) = semester GPA
To calculate the cumulative GPA:
(total quality points from all terms)
) (total credit hours attempted from all terms)
= cumulative GPA
F*/NR
Grades
The “F*” grade is assigned by the Office of the Registrar
when no grade is assigned by the instructor for an active student.
Reasons for the F* grade being assigned include (but are not limited
to): a students failure to drop a class, student attending the incorrect section
of a course, or adding a class incorrectly at registration.
A student receiving an F* should contact
the Office of the Registrar immediately.
A grade of "NR"
is normally assigned when an instructor does not report grades for
an entire class. A student
receiving an “NR” grade should contact the instructor of the class.
X
grade (Undergraduates Only)
An "X" grade is "given
with the approval of the student's dean in extenuating circumstances
beyond the control of the student"(Academic Code, Section 18.1)
when the student’s work is incomplete at the end of the term.
The "X" grade remains on the student's record until
1) the "X" is changed to a letter grade by the instructor, or 2)
the grade is changed to a grade of “F” thirty (30) days into the
next active semester, immediately following the term in which the
"X" grade was assigned.
Given with the approval
of the student’s dean in extenuating circumstances beyond the control
of the student. It reverts to “F” if not changed within 30 days
after the beginning of the next semester in which the student is
enrolled.
I
grade (Graduates Only)
An “I” grade can only be issued for graduate,
graduate business, and law students and indicates incomplete work in a class.
The "I"grade should be converted to a letter grade prior to the beginning of the final exam
period of the next semester in which the student is enrolled. The "I" is calculated into the GPA
as equivalent to a grade of "F."
Incomplete (reserved
for advanced students in advanced studies courses only). It is a
temporary and unacceptable grade indicating a failure to complete work in a course. The course work must be completed and
the “I” changed prior to the beginning of the final examination
period of the next semester in which the student is enrolled; otherwise,
the “I” grade remains on the transcript and is computed as equivalent
at an “F” in calculating averages.
Pass/Fail and S/U Grades
Some classes are offered on a pass/fail
basis and undergraduate upper classmen can opt to enroll in such a class on
a pass/fail basis. A class graded as
pass/fail is not counted in the “hours attempted” calculation, but is counted
in the hours completed total if the student receives a satisfactory grade.
A
junior or senior, with permission from their academic dean, may within the
first seven class days, request to enroll in an elective class, which is
outside of the student’s major and is not required by the student’s program on
a pass/fail basis. This decision is irrevocable. For undergraduates, grades of “A” through “D”
are considered passing and result in a grade of “P.” For graduate and graduate business students,
a passing grade is any grade between an “A” and “C.” A grade considered failing
by the student’s school (undergraduate, graduate, or graduate business) is
issued a final grade of “F.”
Each junior or senior undergraduate may file
with their dean during the first seven class days of the semester
the decision to take one elective course, outside the student’s
major department and not required by the student’s program, per
semester on a pass-fail basis. Such a filing is irrevocable and
will result in conversion by the registrar of the instructor’s final
grade report into an entry of P (“pass”) or F (“fail”) on the student’s
record. The instructor will not be informed that the student has
elected the pass-fail grading option. The registrar will interpret
the final grades of “A” through “D” as “pass.” If a final grade
of “F” is issued, it will be computed into the student’s grade point
average.
An
“S” or “U” grade is typically issued in a zero or one credit hour
course (labs, research classes,
departmental seminars or colloquia, directed studies, workshops,
field education, skill courses, etc.).
An “S” grade is given to those students who meet the requirements
of the course as set by the department or the instructor.
A “U” is issued for failure to meet the course requirements.
W grades
A grade of "W" is
assigned when a student drops a class after the drop/add deadline, or when the student completely withdraws from
the University. Classes graded
“W” are not totaled in the hours attempted or earned.
