A Brief Commentary

I have been a teacher for many years, and an unregenerate bookworm as well.  Both occupations encourage me to write notes in the margins – of practically everything I read.  My favorite texts, however, continue to be drawn from classical antiquity and the medieval period. My poems are marginal notes, glosses in a grateful hand, to celebrate the survival of these ancient works.  I wish to add my thoughts to those of many readers who have listened, heard, and yielded to these pages; and to mark the passage in my own way.
