Jaroslav (Jarda) Cervena.
A Brief Biographical Statement.


Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, immigrated to Minnesota in l968. Since then employed as Professor by The University of Minnesota. He studied medicine (M.D.) and genetics (Ph.D.) Lived in Kenya, Japan and Nigeria and traveled extensively and intesively in five continents. His thinking and views have been influenced mainly by studies of diverse people and their culture, or lack of it.

Awards:
1989—First Place in "Words Worth", Short Story Contest of Minnesota Daily, for "Loss of an Enemy," a story.

l994—First Place in Minnesota Voices Project for the collection of stories: "Mal d'Afrique." Published  by New Rivers Press, 1995.

1995—Blue Jacket Prize for "Mal d'Afrique" in Niigata, Japan.

1998—Runner up for story "Killing of He-Who-Is-Without-Shadow" in Explorations 1998 Contest for Fiction. Publ. by Univ. Alaska Explorations, 1998.

1999—Runner up for story "Salima on Governor's Bed"  in Boston Review Contest for Short Fiction. Published by Boston Review, Vol 25, No. 2, 1999.

2000—Richard Sullivan Prize for Fiction for collection of stories "Revenge of Underwater Man." Published by Notre Dame Press, 2000.

2000—Franz Kafka Award and Medal, from "European Circle of Franz Kafka."

2000—awarded membership  of PEN American Center.
 
2000—awarded membership of Czech Center of P.E.N.

2001—"Revenge of Underwater Man" was nominated  (and became finalist) for the 2001 Minnesota Book Award.

2001—First Place for story "Peoples' Delights" in SASE Annual Fiction Contest, Minnesota

2001—Prize winner for story: "Fausto's Afternoon." Middle English Literary Group  Fiction Contest  2001,  Nashville,TN

2002—Prize winner for story "The Touch". Troubadour Short Story Contest,  Woodstock, Illinois

2002—"Mal d'Afrique" was translated to Czech.

2002—"Revenge of Underwater Man" was translated to Czech. Published by TRITON  as "Damy bruselskych noci," in 2003

2002—completed tne novel "Masquerade"

2002—completed book for children and young adults "Travels of Missi I"

2003—completed collection of stories "Fausto's Afternoon."

2003—First Place in The Annual Short Story Contest of "Minnesota Magazine" for the story "Fausto's Afternoon.

2003—First Place in The Writer's Digest  3rd Annual Short Short Story Competition (7,300 entries!)  for "Peoples' Delights".

2003—Runner up in The 4th Annual Short Story Contest of The Key West Writers Guild for the story "Jocelyn's Carving."

2003- admitted to the Czech Writers' Association (Obec Spisovatelu.)
