Alumni Association Awards
The James F. Armstrong Award will be presented to Father
Paul F. Doyle, CSC, '65, '75M.Th., at Alumni Senate in
April in recognition of his distinguished service to the University.
Doyle was a trustee and fellow of the University from 1991 to
'97 during his tenure as religious superior of the Holy Cross
priests for the Indiana Province. He is associate rector of the
Basilica of the Sacred Heart and has been rector of Dillon Hall
since 1997.
The Family Exemplar Award will be presented to Cheryl and Ronald
A. Homer '68 at Alumni Senate. Ronald Homer is a founding
member of the Catholic Schools Foundation, a board member for
the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, and vice chair of The Boston
Foundation and the United Way of Mass Bay. He is CEO of Access
Capital Strategies in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cheryl Homer serves
as vice chair of The Wellness Community of Greater Boston, which
assists individuals and families dealing with cancer, of which
she is a survivor. In 1993 the Homers and their son, Ronald, were
honored by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Children.
The William D. Reynolds Award will be presented to Father Alfred
F. D'Alonzo, CSC, '49, '60M.A., during halftime of the Blue-Gold
football game in April. D'Alonzo earned a doctorate in administration
from the University of Ottawa. He served as prefect of discipline,
director of athletics, teacher, vice principal, counselor and
headmaster at high schools in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
He also was dean of students at King's College. In 1981, D'Alonzo
returned to Notre Dame and served on the Moreau Seminary staff,
as director of Campus Bible Study, as counselor in the office
of Academic Services for Student-Athletes and as assistant rector
in Pangborn and Carroll halls.
The Distinguished Alumnus Award will be given to Father Joseph
Hayden '44 at a date to be determined. Hayden served as a diocesan
priest for the Diocese of Camden, New Jersey, from 1948 to '91.
He introduced "Engaged Encounter" to his diocese in 1976 and was
moderator for more than 150 marriage counseling workshops. He
is a presenter for "Retrouvaille," a program to help couples heal
and renew their marriage, and is the author of Marriage: Our
First Career. He was associate editor of Chaplain's Digest,
a newsletter sponsored by Notre Dame and sent to chaplains in
the armed forces during World War II.
Thomas Sullivan '96 of San Francisco will receive the Young
Alumni Award at Alumni Senate in April. Sullivan has held several
positions in the Notre Dame Club of San Francisco, including young
alumni director, student-alumni relations director, vice president
and president. He has been particularly successful in drawing
young alumni to club activities and coordinating multiple events.
As a Notre Dame student, Sullivan was a resident assistant and
served in student government positions. He is vice president of
Portfolio Management at Bank of America, where he has also co-chaired
the United Way Campaign.
Elizabeth "Betsy" Finneran Kennedy '59SMC and Dr. James R. Kennedy
'57 of Kankakee, Illinois, will be presented the Rev. Louis J.
Putz, CSC, Award. The Kennedys have established a well-baby clinic,
a Montessori school, day care centers and youth swim teams for
under-served families. They spent 10 years as medical missionaries
in Saint Lucia, British West Indies, and provide service to the
United Way, Kankakee Valley Theatre, Amateur Athletic Union, the
American Cancer Society, Red Cross and the Diocese of Joliet.
Alumni Travel
Among more than 40 travel opportunities in 2005 for alumni
and friends is a 10-day Great Lakes Cruise with Tom Swartz, ND
professor of economics and policy studies. Participants will cruise
aboard the M.S. Columbus September 2-12 and dock at Chicago,
Mackinac Island, Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario and Gooseberry Falls
State Park.
A tour of Tuscany will be hosted by Barbara Mangione '89M.A.,
Notre Dame professor of Italian, from September 7 to 15. Based
in Cortona, the comprehensive tour includes day trips to Florence,
Montepulciano, Perugia, Assisi and Siena. For more information,

Service to the South Bend Community
The Alumni Association's Family Volunteer Camp, July
10-15, is a multigenerational effort to assist in neighborhood
beautification and renovation projects. It features campus lodging,
local recreational events and children's programs.
During the Hammerin' Irish Blitz Build, June 12-17, alumni and
friends will construct a house in a South Bend neighborhood in
