Downtown South Bend
The University of Notre Dame is located in northwest Indiana in St. Joseph County, just minutes south of the Michigan/Indiana border and, approximately, 90 miles east of Chicago. The city of South Bend and the neighboring city of Mishawaka are adjacent to the University campus and form a small, family-oriented metropolitan area of about 258,000 residents.

The cost of living in the South Bend area is comparatively low, averaging 60 to 80 percent of what one would pay in most large metropolitan areas in the U.S. Among the cultural, recreational, and athletic activities in the South Bend area are the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, the Broadway Theater League, and a minor-league baseball team.

The Notre Dame campus is accessible by air via the South Bend Regional airport, shuttles that run from the two Chicago airports, and Amtrak rail service. The drive from downtown Chicago to the Notre Dame campus typically takes between 90 minutes and two hours, depending on traffic.
