NDLS Graduate

The Law School strongly discourages students from working during their first year. Students who wish to work on a minimal basis should consult with the assistant dean for students prior to entering into this decision. Second- and third-year students may work up to 20 hours per week, though most students decide to focus their attention on their studies and involvement in co-curricular and extracurricular endeavors.

Upper-level law students who wish to work on a part-time basis during the academic year to help defray the costs of law school will find a number of opportunities available on campus, as well as with employers in South Bend and surrounding communities.

On-campus employment that students and recent graduates have held include the following:

Assistant Rector Positions: Assistant rectors contract for a full-time academic year appointment, i.e. nine months. The starting salary for assistant rectors is approximately $7,000 per semester. In addition, assistant rectors are provided with a furnished room and a University meal plan during their academic year appointment. 90% of the Assistant Rectors on campus are law students. For more information about how to apply for these positions, refer to http://osa.nd.edu/join_hall_staff/asst_rector.shtml

Graduate and Teaching Assistant positions: Several law students serve as Graduate or Teaching Assistants during their 2L and 3L years. Assistantships allow you to devote your full attention to studying, teaching, and/or laboratory work while earning a stipend that covers your cost of living and some educational expenses. Notre Dame has set a work-week limit of 17.5 hours for teaching assistants. On average, Notre Dame students work about 15 hours a week. This stipend is taxable income (federal, state and county); there is no Federal Income Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) withholding for students.

Research Assistant positions: Each year, some 20-30 law students serve as research assistants for members of the Law School faculty. These positions may be held during the academic year or doing the summer. Positions are advertised by faculty members via email. The typical pay is $10 per hour.

Other: If you are interested in other on-campus employment, you may visit the student employment site or human resources web page.
