International
Law and the London Law Centre
Notre Dame law students who wish to add an international
dimension to their legal education can participate in
one of two programs offered by the Law School at the
University's London, England, campus. Students may elect
to spend either a summer session or their full second
year at the London Law Centre. In both programs, students
learn from distinguished American, British and European
scholars and practitioners, and can select from a curriculum
that includes a wealth of international and comparative
law courses, as well as some of the courses that are
required of all J.D. candidates.

Beyond
the academic experience, students in either of the London
programs have the opportunity to observe and visit the
Old Bailey, the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and
the Judicial Committee of the House of Lords. Students
also may study and perform research at the library of
the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, one of the
finest legal research facilities in Europe.
The Notre Dame London Law Centre is located at 1 Suffolk
Street on the northwest corner of Trafalgar Square in
central London. The Law Centre is next to the National
Gallery and National Portrait Gallery, on the edge of
theatreland and only ten minutes walk from Buckingham
Palace and Downing Street to the west and legal London
to the east. Public open areas such as St. James' Park,
Waterloo Gardens, Embankment Gardens and the River Thames
are less than five minutes walk, while King's College,
the London School of Economics and the Royal Courts
of Justice are nearby along the Strand.

2nd
Year Study Program (Concannon Program In International
Law)
Distinctive
among U.S. law schools is Notre Dame's
Concannon Program in International Law, the only full
academic-year program approved by the American Bar Association.
In addition to choosing from an extensive array of international
law and comparative law courses, Concannon Program participants
may earn credit for an internship with British barristers,
solicitors, multinational corporations, and law firms.
After
spending a full academic year in London, students return
to the home campus with greater insights into the origins
and history of American law, as well as with a deeper
understanding of international law issues and practice.
The
Concannon Program is available only to Notre Dame students
who are in good academic standing. Each year, some 30
Notre Dame law students elect to participate in the
Concannon Program, though there is no limit or space
restrictions for Notre Dame students who may wish to
participate. Law students from other ABA-approved law
schools are not permitted to participate in the Concannon
Program.

Summer
Study in London
Notre Dame law students, as well as students from other
law schools in the US and other continents, who wish
to study international and comparative law in the summer
may enroll in the Law School's Summer Program in London.
Notre
Dame's program is the oldest American summer law program
conducted in London. In the summer of 2001, seventy-six
students enrolled. Approximately half of those students
were from Notre Dame Law School; almost a quarter were
from Australia (from Notre Dame Australia and the University
of Queensland); the remainder were from some forty different
law schools in the United States.
The
curriculum of the Summer London program emphasizes courses
in the comparative and international law fields taught
largely by British faculty. Students have found that
the opportunity to study law in such a program not only
facilitates their obtaining a law degree but enables
them to learn about and enjoy the rich legal and cultural
heritage of Britain.
