The
Law School and other divisions of the University have
established a number of dual-degree programs that permit
students who have particular interests to earn two advanced
degrees in less time than it would take to earn the
degrees separately. This is accomplished primarily by
allowing some law courses to count as electives toward
other degrees, as well as by allowing some other courses
to count among the nine elective credits permitted within
the J.D. curriculum.
Students
who wish to pursue dual degree programs must be accepted
for admission both by the Law School and by the particular
professional or graduate program involved. Similarly,
prospective dual-degree students should apply for financial
assistance to both programs.
The M.B.A./J.D. Program
The M.B.A./J.D. student divides time between the Law
School and the Business School and benefits from an
array of course offerings from both schools, as well
as the reduction of one year of studies made possible
by the elimination of certain elective courses.
The
successful M.B.A./J.D. candidate must apply to and be
accepted for admission to both schools. In order to
be considered eligible for admission, the M.B.A./J.D.
candidate must take both the Law School Admission Test
(LSAT) and the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).
An applicant not accepted by the Law School may still
apply to the MBA Program.
The
M.B.A. program is under the direction of the graduate
division of the Mendoza College of Business. The business
curriculum combines an intensive study of the basic
management disciplines with the decision-making experience
of case analysis. Further information regarding the
M.B.A. program may be obtained from the M.B.A.
Admissions Office.
M.A./J.D.
(English and Law)
The relevance to law of fields of literacy study such
as narratology and hermeneutics prompted the English
Department and the Law School to introduce a dual-degree
program in 1991. Upon admission to the program, the
student develops a program of study with the director
of graduate studies in English, the Law School, and
the Graduate School. The latter will coordinate the
program of studies.
Students
are admitted to the program through the procedures of
the Graduate School and the Department of English. The
program is open only to students already admitted to
the Law School. For an application, please contact the
Graduate School.
The
J.D./M.S. in Engineering and Law
Students interested in environmental, patent and telecommunications
law may apply for a dual degree program through the
Law School and the College of Engineering. Click

Other
Dual Degree Programs
Where appropriate and with the approval of the department
involved, other dual degree programs may be fashioned
to suit individual interests or needs. Typically, approval
for such programs requires consultation with the assistant
dean for students in the Law School and the
appropriate administrator in the other graduate department
or program.
