Notre Dame law students who wish to integrate the representation
of live clients into their legal education may enroll in
the Legal Aid Clinic. Clinical students earn academic credit
while providing legal services to local residents who cannot
afford private-practice attorneys. Participation in the Legal
Aid Clinic is available to second-year students and third-year
students.
Under the close supervision of clinical
faculty, students undertake direct representation of clients
before state
and federal courts and administrative bodies. A simultaneous
classroom component allows students to refine their practice
skills and reflect on ethical issues confronted in their
cases.
The Legal Aid Clinic accepts cases only on a referral
basis from local agencies, including Indiana Legal Services.
Prospective clients should NOT call the Legal Aid Clinic
directly, but
should instead call Indiana Legal Services at 574-234-8121.
