Loan Repayment Assistance Program

Notre Dame Law School (the "Law School") announced in 2001 the establishment of a Loan Repayment Assistance Program (the "Program") to assist eligible graduates of the Law School who work in low-paying public interest, public service or other similar positions with their law school loans. Under the Program, the Law School selects a limited number of graduates each year and extends loans to these graduates to help them repay qualifying law school educational loans.

Thanks in part to substantial recent donations to Program endowments from alumni and friends, the Law School will enhance the Program beginning with calendar year 2008 (for which applications are due November 1, 2007). The Law School will increase the level of benefits to Program participants and will shorten the period of time during which participants must work in qualifying employment before their Program loans are forgiven. Program loans will be gradually forgiven over a three-year period. The accompanying Program Description provides complete details concerning eligibility, benefits, and administration.

By adopting this Program, the Law School seeks to help alleviate an obstacle that has prevented many interested graduates from pursuing low-paying positions in public interest, public service or other similar employment. The Law School also hopes to encourage graduates to pursue careers in such fields. The Law School recognizes that lawyers bear a responsibility to provide services to people who cannot afford legal representation, and to use their legal education in other ways for the public good. This responsibility flows from the Gospel and our desire, as members of the living body of Christ, to help build God's kingdom on earth.

Interested applicants to the Law School, current students at the Law School and graduates should note that there is no guarantee they will obtain loan repayment assistance under this Program. The Law School has obtained limited endowed funding for this Program, such that at least some funding will be available each year. The Law School will continue its efforts to increase the endowment. However, funding for the Program may fluctuate from year-to-year and may decrease from one year to the next. There also may be multiple eligible graduates who apply for funding in any given year, such that demands on the Program will exceed available funds.
