Fire Prevention Tips
The
firefighters at the Notre Dame Fire Department are available to answer
specific inquiries on fire prevention. The three leading causes
of structure fires are listed below as well as a few helpful ideas to
prepare onself in the event of a fire. Further information and
specific rules concerning safety can also be found in du Lac.
Leading Causes of Fires
One of the leading cause of fires is smoking and the improper disposal of smoking related materials. For your safety and the safety of others, smoking is not allowed inside any building on the campus of Notre Dame with the exception of a few designated smoking areas.
Many fires are caused by candles or other types of open flame. Please do not use candles or other free burning products in buildings on campus.
The third leading cause of structure fires is cooking accidents. Please do not use "hot plates" or other portable cooking utensils inside campus buildings. Please use provided kitchens and kitchenettes. Also, familiarize yourself with the use of fire extinguishers in the event of a small cooking accident.
Be Prepared
Locate all emergency exits in your building and become familiar with emergency alarm and exit procedures. If assistance is needed exiting a building, please let your Rector or Supervisor know in order to make arrangements in the event of an emergency.
Most of all, REPORT ALL FIRES IMMEDIATELY BY DIALING 911. Evacuate the fire area and call the Fire Department. Do not reenter a burning building once you have exited. If you can safely attempt to extinguish a small fire, do so with the provided fire extinguisher, after calling the Fire Department.
