Call for Papers for 2005-2006 Academic Year
The Notre Dame Center for Ethics & Culture is pleased to issue a call for academic papers and book reviews for future editions of its undergraduate humanities journal. Unfortunately, the deadline for the second edition submissions was June 10, 2006, but for those still interested please remember you can submit all year round. For submission guidelines, click here.
Mission
The primary purpose of this journal is to provide undergraduates
with a forum rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition for the discussion
of ideas and issues in the humanities. In addition to promoting dialogue
among students, the journal aims to encourage excellence in undergraduate
scholarship and to afford the opportunity for undergraduates to publish
their scholarly work.
Content
In our print edition, we publish academic papers in the humanities and
book reviews. Paper topics and books reviewed need not be explicitly Catholic
or religious in nature, but they should be connected with, or in some
way engage, the Catholic intellectual tradition. This tradition, as developed
by such figures as Augustine, Aquinas and, more recently, Pope John Paul
II, is one of "faith seeking understanding," which holds that faith and
reason do not conflict, but rather inform each other and lead to Truth.
The Catholic intellectual tradition seeks to understand how the truths
studied in the secular disciplines (the sciences and the humanities) relate
to the truths known through Catholic theology. We welcome and indeed encourage
papers about or from the perspectives of other faith traditions (Christian
and non-Christian) that foster constructive dialogue with the Catholic
intellectual tradition.
In addition to the papers and book reviews in the print edition, the online
edition of the journal includes interviews with professors in the humanities
from a variety of universities on a wide range of topics. The online edition
also publishes commentary on and responses to its papers and reviews in
the form of letters to the editors in order to allow an exchange of ideas
among our readers and contributors. Authors are given the opportunity
to respond to comments on their work.
Vita, Dulcedo et Spes accepts submissions from undergraduates
from any accredited college or university. The journal is edited
and refereed by a board of Notre Dame undergraduates, with a non-student
referee from the Notre Dame Center for Ethics & Culture. David Solomon,
director of the Center, and Alasdair MacIntyre, senior research fellow
at the Center, serve as the journal's academic advisors.
Contributors must be undergraduates at accredited universities or colleges. Work submitted by graduated seniors must have been written before their graduation, and it must be submitted within six months of their graduation.
The journal accepts contributions at any time, so there is no submission deadline. Issues will be published annually.
We will notify contributors via email when we have received their papers. Notification of acceptance status will be given within three months of submission.
Papers should be 3,000-5,000 words. Book reviews should be no longer than 2,000 words.
Submissions should be written in a standard research style, consulting the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing or The Chicago Manual of Style .
Vita, Dulcedo et Spes holds copyright to all papers published.
The deadline for submissions for the 2005-2006 academic year is June 10, 2006.
