Myser Fellowship

The Myser Fellowship is generously provided by the Myser Family Foundation. The intention of the Myser Fellowship is to bring to the Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture a junior scholar with manifest excellence in teaching, and at least one year of full-time teaching experience at a college or university, for a year of full-time research and writing on ethical issues related to the Catholic moral and intellectual tradition. Philosophers are encouraged to apply, but the fellowships will also be open to scholars in other areas of the humanities and the social sciences. The current Myser Fellow is Sarah Borden.

We are pleased to begin accepting applications for the next Myser Fellowship. Applicants must already be in possession of a Ph.D. in the humanities or social sciences with at least one year of full-time teaching experience at a college or university. The term of the fellowship is one academic year, to begin in August 2009, although special arrangements may be made to take the fellowship in the calendar year, beginning in January 2010.  Fellows must be in residence for two consecutive semesters and engage in a well-defined research project on ethical issues related to the Catholic moral and intellectual tradition.  The Center will provide half of the fellow’s current salary, up to $40,000, and will expect the fellow's home institution to provide the remainder.  Fellows are expected to participate fully in the life and activities of the Center, and will be given full access to the University of Notre Dame’s research and recreational facilities.

Applicants must submit a cover letter of introduction, a curriculum vitae, a research proposal, documentation of their excellence in teaching (e.g., student evaluations and testimonials, administrative evaluations and letters of recommendation, information regarding teaching awards won, and the like), and three reference letters. The research proposal should not exceed ten double-spaced pages and should outline their research project and its scholarly significance as well as its contribution to the mission of the Center.  Details regarding the Center’s mission should be closely consulted here.

The deadline for application for the fellowship is December 12, 2008, and the fellowship winner will be notified no later than January 30, 2009. Applications may be submitted either by post or electronically. Applications or inquiries submitted by post should be addressed to:
