Group Chief Executive of BP Speaks at Commencement

The Lord John Browne of Madingley spoke at the Mendoza College's Graduate Diploma Ceremony in May. More than 300 graduates from the MBA, Executive MBA, MS in Accountancy and MS in Administration programs attended the ceremony with their families.

Lord Browne reminded the graduates that leadership is a privilege and a responsibility. "Leadership is about more than rules," he explained. "Real leadership is something delivered by example. Leadership is about standards set by those who are leaders, the standards of personal ethics which demonstrate more directly than written rules what is acceptable and what is not." Browne began his career with BP in 1966 and served for more than 30 years in a wide variety of production and senior management positions until his appointment as Group Chief Executive of BP in 1995. He was knighted in 1998.
