Advisory Council Hosts Seminar on Technology and the Economy
To
celebrate the naming of the Mendoza College of Business in honor of
Tom (ND '73) and Kathy Mendoza, the College's advisory council hosted
a public seminar on technology and the economy in September.
Titled
"e-magine: Exploring the Future of Business," the seminar, presented
to a standing-room-only crowd in the College's Jordan Auditorium, featured
presentations by Dr. Cheryl Shavers, the U.S. Commerce Department's
under secretary for technology, Dan Warmenhoven, chief executive officer
of Network Appliance (NetApp), and the Mendozas - Tom (ND '73), the
president of NetApp, and Kathy, the firm's vice president for strategic
investments and global alliances. The Mendozas, who made a $35-million
gift to the College earlier this year, have played a significant role
in the success of NetApp, the leading provider of electronic data storage
products.
NetApp
was ranked the nation's fourth fastest growing company by Fortune magazine,
and is a member of both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100. NetApp CEO Warmenhoven
has guided NetApp's rapid rise since 1994. Before joining NetApp, he
was chairman, president and chief executive officer of Network Equipment
Technologies for four years and spent five years in senior management
positions with Hewlett-Packard.
Dr. Shavers
directs technology administration in the Commerce Department, including
the Office of Technology Policy, the National Institute of Standards
and Technology and the National Technical Information Service. She previously
worked in the private sector as director of emerging technologies for
Intel.
In
addition to the e-magine seminar, the advisory council attended a ceremony
to bless the Mendoza College of Business building. ND President Father
Edward ("Monk") Malloy presided over the ceremony and a festive black
tie dinner for 230 people in a tent outside the Morris Inn on campus.
