"Not only was the internship
[with Peter Herrley, ND '68] interesting and challenging,
but I greatly improved my French speaking and confidence,
and also learned how to be more independent and
self-reliant...." Leslie Kealhofer, Paris intern,

Brittny Heinrich enjoys a
little visit with her father in Scotland. My project,
"The International Arts on an Intimate Level"
was a wonderful...experience.... I talked with German,

"Thanks
to the Nanovic Institute research grant I had
the opportunity to immerse myself in British attitudes
and policies toward Europe. I was able to more
fully understand how Britain as guided by elected
representatives currently views itself as a part
of Europe."
Scott Schaeffer, grant recipient, 2004 |

Bridget,

the Seine in Paris, where she spent a lot of time
doing research.

"Studying
in Munich over the summer was an incredible learning
experience, both in the classroom and outside of
it. After spending much time talking with doctoral
candidates here about their studies in transcendental
philosophy, I now know with much more certainty
what specific issues I would like to pursue in graduate
work."
Anne Hamilton, grant recipient, 2003 |

"My research
is focused on the electoral rise of Sinn Fein in
Northern Ireland and the impact it is having on
Republican ideology. The experience during the past
month has been incredible. I've interviewed politicians,
voters, community workers, and ex-prisoners. but
the most memorable part of the trip has been living
in a Nationalist community in North Belfast."
Daniel Murphy, grant recipient 2003 |
"Hallo!
I just wanted to drop the Institute a line and let
everyone know that things are going very well for
me in Koblenz. I have started my research and even
took a tour to the bowels of the archives. They
have more documents in one room than I could have
ever imagined! ...My German has already improved.
I love the German language, I love German culture,
and I love the fact that I woke up this morning
and could watch the German morning news on TV. I
have the Nanovic Institute to thank for that!"

"With
the assistance of a Nanovic Institute summer grant
to Russia, I explored unique sources for my senior
thesis research on the Moscow police. During my
time in Moscow, I interviewed journalists who
regularly report about police activities, Americans
who work with Russian law enforcement and legislative
officials, and both former and present members
the Moscow police department. The hightlight of
my research was a tour of Petrovka, 38--the main
headquarters of the Moscow police. Though Petrovka,
38 is a place few women (and even fewer foreigners)
every visit, I saw everything from high-ranking
officials' offices to interrocation rooms. Overall,
the time I spent in Moscow was an extraordinary
experience and a rare opportunity for in-depth
field research.

"The
research I have been doing this summer, made possible
by the Nanovic Institute, has been extremely fruitful.
I spent the months of May and June in Paris working
both in the Jesuit archives and in France's diplomatic
archives at the Quai d'Orsay. then I went on to
work in French archives in Lebanon. The research
is going very well. I think that the research
I have been doing this summer will enable me to
write an especially important dissertation."
