INTERDISCIPLINARY and COLLABORATIVE

     In this REU program, students can participate in a variety of cutting edge projects at the interface between engineering and biology.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
    The projects are designed for students in engineering disciplines (bioengineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering) or in natural sciences (chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, computer science, or mathematics).  Resources such as the Integrated Circuit Fabrication laboratory and a variety of advanced research instrumentation are key to the sucess of the research. 
INTENSE AND FOCUSED

     This is a 10 week program.  Students join a research group and basically function as graduate students for the summer, attending group meetings and reading in the primary literature to learn about the background of their research project. 

STUDENT SUPPORT

     Each student recieves benefits totalling about $7,500   These include:

  • On-campus housing and meal plan
  • Travel allowance (up to $400)
  • Research budget (up to $500)
  • Cash stipend of $3000 ($300/week)

     All REU students are housed together in two dormitories on campus.

SEMINARS AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

     Each week the REU students meet with Dr. Lieberman;  some weeks are for discussion of recent papers or topics related to career development, and some are progress reports given by students. 

     Program activities planned for 2008 include a day trip to Argonne National Laboratory (the Center for Nanofabricated Materials), an optional GRE prep course, rafting on the East Race, and our traditional July 4th party.
