Incorporation of resistors along with tunnel junctions
leads to the suppression of the higher order tunneling processes. But
can resistors be used instead of tunnel junctions? Some people
say yes. We fabricate and test devices using Cr oxide resistors
connected to various metal layers (Al, Au,Pt). The results are pointing
to the "no" answer
Very broad distribution of the resulting resistances is
typical for this method of SET fabrication
The yield of the devices showing Coulomb blockade
oscillations is typically very low
Two figures are showing Coulomb blockade in SETs with resistors: oscillation
