I. Apply
for internships
Companies do NOT EXPECT internship candidates to have
any experience. Be sure to be in touch with the Career
Center and the MEP office
regarding companies interested in ND engineering students.
Companies look for:
- Attitude and willingness to learn how "they
do engineering"
- A good match with their company-- your interests
with their industry.
{Your interests are "expressed" by your
grades, involvement with the department and participation
in technical projects
- Your understanding of the company (its industry)
and wiliness to relocate.
II. Get involved in undergraduate
research
This is very important for students who plan on pursuing
advanced degrees.
- SEMESTER --Visit your advisor or
a professor in a subject that you are interested in.
Discuss that subject area and ask if there is an opportunity
for you to get involved. UG research can be flexible
in that it may be paid/volunteer and for/not for credit.
- SUMMER research usually involves
choosing between ND & another school; depending
on your research interests. Expect to receive travel,
room & board, and a small stipend (between $3000
to $6000).
III. Get involved in projects
Join a technical organization and jump right in. They
won't ask those who are not familiar or willing to do
hard or tedious tasks.
Projects include concrete canoe (ASCE), sun racers (ASE/ASME),
programming challenges (ACM), and robot competitions
(IEEE).
IV. Register for EPICS here on campus
It is a fantastic way to combine your technical background
with community service. You will also receive credit
for this activity. Information is found at:
