The Stowe Missal

Tallaght, Co. Dublin (Ireland), early ninth century
Pointed Irish minuscule

Royal Irish Academy, Dublin (Ireland)
Ms. D. II 3

Date of Publication of the Facsimile: 1906
Publisher: Henry Bradshaw Society
Collotype plates: University Press, Oxford (England)
Printer: Harrison and Sons, London (England)

The facsimile reproduces this early Missal from Ireland, that is, that part of the extant codex which contains the Ordinary and Canon of the Mass, a few special Masses, the Order of Baptism and of the Visitation of the Sick, followed by an Irish treatise on the Mass. It omits, however, the extracts from the Gospel of St. John which were bound together with these in the manuscript, probably at some later time. Such emphasis on some particular type of text, to the exclusion of its present codicological context, is characteristic of facsimiles produced for learned societies with a particular interest -- in this case the study of early liturgy.
