Books of hours, were the prayer books used by wealthy lay people from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries. They were generally made in special workshops, according to the specifications of the buyer.

Eight separate colors and real gold were used in the creation of the beautiful facsimile of this exquisite miniature book of hours, which glories in the late-medieval fondness for naturalistic artistic representation of plant and animal life.
