The goal of this project was to develop a device to purify polluted water using human work input as the only energy source. A prototype device was developed which utilizes mechanical power from a human pedaling a bike to rotate a generator shaft and produce electrical power. This electricity passes through a resistive heating element immersed in polluted water within an insulated container. When the water boils, steam flows through a condenser tubing coil and the distilled liquid condensate flows into a collection vessel. Temperature, RPM, and current sensors attached to a microcontroller provide the operator with system performance information.
