Area-Studies Reading Lists on Europe and Advanced Industrial Democracies

Students who wish to be examined on European countries much choose either the "Western/Central Europe and the European Union" list or the "Advanced Industrial Democracies" list.  These two lists overlap, as indicated in Figure 1:

In other words, those who choose Western/Central Europe and the EU are tested on the European Union as a political system and on any two member countries.  Currently (2004), the member countries of the EU are Austria, Belgium,  Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Those who wish to include the US, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand must choose the "Advanced Industrial Democracies" list. Japan can be selected on either the "Advanced Industrial Democracies" list or the "East and Southeast Asia" list.

Those who choose the "Advanced Industrial Democracies" list are tested on three countries and not on the EU as a political system. The three countries can be any of the older members of the EU or any other advanced industrial democracy. Therefore, these students choose three countries from the following list: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand.

Although technically any selection of countries from these lists is permissible, in some cases students will be better prepared for the examination if they choose countries that have been well researched or that are well known to our faculty.  Students should consult with the field chair and Europe specialists on the faculty as they choose their region and countries.
